Despite being a popular sitcom in the early 2020s, The Neighborhood was canceled by CBS before its eighth and final season started in 2025. The show concluded with the eighth season finale, marking the end of its 154-episode run with the episode “Welcome to Goodbye.” The Neighborhood, which premiered in 2018, followed the lives of the Butlers and the Johnsons, two contrasting families living next door to each other.
When Max Greenfield’s character, Dave Johnson, a cheerful and somewhat awkward newcomer, moved his family into a historically Black neighborhood headed by Cedric the Entertainer’s character, Calvin Butler, the two families clashed at first. Over the show’s eight seasons, though, they discovered they had a lot in common and eventually became friends. While Dave and Calvin’s relationship developed, it was Calvin’s sons, Marty and Malcolm, who really became fan favorites.
CBS Already Canceled The Neighborhood Ahead Of Season 9
At the end of season 7 of The Neighborhood, the finale, “Welcome to Venice,” hinted at a spinoff show. However, CBS soon canceled both the spinoff and The Neighborhood itself, announcing that season 8 would be the show’s last. The planned spinoff would have followed Malcolm and Marty as they moved to the changing neighborhood of Venice Beach, but it never made it to production. CBS officially canceled both projects in March 2025.
According to TVInsider, the team behind The Neighborhood reworked the series finale to focus on the weddings of Marty and Malcolm. They wanted to give the show a powerful emotional ending, especially since it was canceled sooner than expected. The finale highlighted the younger characters who were originally meant to star in a planned spin-off series. When that spin-off was cancelled, its first season’s storyline was instead woven into the final season of The Neighborhood.
What Happened To The Neighborhood’s Spinoff (Will It Still Happen?)
The planned spin-off featuring Marty and Malcolm didn’t move forward, but it was introduced in the movie “Welcome to Venice.” In the movie, Malcolm uses the money he received as an advance for his book to buy a house in Venice Beach. Though it needs a lot of work – his father, Calvin, famously thinks it’s a waste of money – Malcolm is more concerned about who lives next door. His neighbors on one side are Matisse and Bellamy, a lively couple who are an influencer and activist, and they love to throw loud parties.
Justin Long played Bruce, a wealthy tech entrepreneur who moved in next door and immediately offered Malcolm a huge sum of money to buy and tear down his house, adding the land to Bruce’s own property. The planned spin-off of The Neighborhood would have centered on Malcolm trying to navigate the conflict between his neighbors, putting him in a similar, humorous situation as Dave Johnson experienced when he first moved into the original show’s neighborhood.
What The Neighborhood Season 9‘s Story Could Have Been
The recent cancellation of The Neighborhood’s spin-off appears to stem from the same issue that led to the original show’s end: declining viewership. Ratings fell from a peak of 8.1 million in season one to just 3.88 million in season seven. While these numbers might not have been enough to cancel a sitcom on another network, The Neighborhood consistently received negative reviews from critics throughout its run. As a result, the show ended before it could fully develop the storyline of Malcolm and Marty’s marriage, leaving their future unexplored.
