Nathan Fillion has been a familiar face on TV since the late 1990s, with roles in popular shows like Two Guys and a Girl, Firefly, and Castle. Recently, Castle reached some significant viewership numbers on Hulu.
According to FlixPatrol, The Rookie is now the most popular movie on Hulu in the United States, jumping nine spots in the rankings. The show has also been a consistent hit, appearing on Hulu’s Top 10 TV Shows list for an impressive 350 days.
The Rookie’s Streaming Success Comes Amid an Uncertain Future on ABC
Created by Alexi Hawley, The Rookie first aired on ABC in October 2018. The show follows John Nolan, a 45-year-old man from Pennsylvania who starts a new career as a police officer in Los Angeles. As the oldest rookie in the LAPD after graduating from the Police Academy, Nolan faces the challenges and dangers of his new job.
Considering how well The Rookie is doing on Hulu, it’s unexpected that ABC hasn’t renewed the show for the 2026-27 season yet. They renewed it for its current eighth season last April, so the network should decide whether to continue the show before the end of the month.
ABC is considering a new series called The Rookie North, set in Washington state. The show would follow Alex Holland, a newcomer to law enforcement who joins the Pierce County Police Department after experiencing a home invasion. He’d be the oldest rookie ever to join the department.
Development on the project began at Lionsgate Television and 20th Television in December 2024. Noah Hawley wrote a pilot episode for the planned spinoff.
Nathan Fillion Is Spearheading New Firefly Revival
The fate of the show The Rookie is still uncertain, but Nathan Fillion’s earlier series, Firefly, is making a comeback. It will be revived as an animated show, taking place chronologically between the original Firefly series and the movie Serenity.
Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters will be leading the creative side of the new animated Firefly series. While the original creator, Joss Whedon, isn’t involved, Nathan Fillion confirmed they received Whedon’s support for the reboot. Fillion stated that the passionate fanbase has kept the 25-year-old show alive and that bringing Firefly back is something fans both want and deserve, a sentiment he expressed when the project was first revealed last month.
The show Firefly takes place in 2517, after humans have colonized a new star system. It follows the crew of Serenity, a spaceship of the ‘Firefly-class’, and their often unlawful adventures. Nathan Fillion starred as Malcolm Reynolds, the captain and owner of the ship. The main cast also included Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Ron Glass. Sadly, Ron Glass, who passed away in 2016, is the only member of the core cast who is no longer with us.
The next episode of The Rookie, titled “Survive the Streets,” will be shown on ABC on April 13th. You can also watch all episodes of the series on Hulu.
