The “Must-Watch Masterpiece” WWII Action Movie That Was Ruined by the Most Insulting Ending Ever Is Dominating Streaming

A recent movie called The Tank is topping Prime Video’s charts, even though many viewers haven’t heard of it. One critic compared it to Shutter Island, but set during World War II. This German-made film is number one globally on Prime Video, and currently second in the U.S. behind Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun.

The movie Tank (known as Der Tiger in its original language) is an anti-war film that’s garnered a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it hasn’t received any critical reviews and isn’t generating much buzz. It’s one of those streaming titles that appears on platforms like Prime Video, attracting a large audience simply because of its genre and prominent placement on lists of ‘new releases’.

The Tank is directed by Dennis Gansel and stars David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Andre Hennicke, and Sebastian Urzendowsky among others. The synopsis of the movie reads:

In 1943, on the Eastern Front, a German Tiger tank and its five-man crew are sent on a clandestine mission far behind enemy lines. As they venture into dangerous territory, they battle not only the enemy but also their own inner demons. Fueled by methamphetamine issued by the German army, their assignment spirals into a harrowing descent into darkness.

In July 2025, the Amazon Original movie Der Tiger will make history as the first to be released in German cinemas. Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, explained, “We knew from the moment Dennis Gansel and producer Frank Kusche pitched us the idea that this film needed to be made. It’s a truly special story, and deserves a wide audience.” He added that Gansel, an award-winning director known for films like Napola and The Wave, brings a unique understanding to the film’s sensitive subject matter.

‘The Tank’ Is a “Must Watch” but You Will Not Be Prepared for the Ending

Although The Tank isn’t flawless, many viewers praise its gripping intensity, realistic portrayal of the psychological toll of war on soldiers, and authentic setting.

Many viewers highly recommend this film, even those who aren’t typically fans of war movies, with some calling it the best tank-based thriller since Fury. However, others feel the strong start of the first two acts is ruined by a disappointing ending – a common frustration for moviegoers. Spoilers follow if you continue reading.

Reviews of the film on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb (where it has a score of 6.6) consistently point to one thing – its ending. While some find it shocking, many describe it as terrible, making it both a memorable and problematic part of the movie.

One IMDb user, Hoops-85, gave the movie two stars and was highly critical of the ending, calling it a predictable and terrible cliché. They were shocked that the filmmakers used such an overused plot device and felt it rendered the entire movie pointless. They advise viewers not to waste their time.

Look, I’m a film fan, and nobody likes a movie that resorts to the ‘it was all a dream’ trope, or any kind of cop-out ending, really. But honestly? This film hits hard emotionally while it’s happening. If you can just get past the way it wraps things up – or doesn’t, really – you’ll find a movie that’s absolutely worth checking out and is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
