As a huge fan of The Boys, I’m really excited about what’s coming next! For seven years, the show has been all about Billy Butcher’s battle with Homelander, and now that that story has reached a crazy climax, it feels like a natural time for a shift. Next year, Amazon is giving us Vought Rising, a prequel series set in the 1950s. It’s going to delve into the history of Vought and, even more interestingly, show us the early days of Soldier Boy and his relationship with Stormfront. I can’t wait to see how they built the foundations of this messed-up universe!
Jensen Ackles is set to lead the new spinoff, but many fans would say he’s been a standout performer since joining The Boys in season 3. While season 3 marked a turning point where the show started to feel directionless and less focused, Ackles’ portrayal of Soldier Boy was a clear highlight. From his first appearance, Soldier Boy commanded attention, and he nearly took over the entire show by the end of the most recent season.
Hughie Campbell is right – Soldier Boy constantly talks about sex. Even though he’s a bit of a simple character with often childish jokes, he’s delivered some of the funniest and most iconic lines in The Boys.
“You Should Smile More. I Bet It’s A Beautiful Smile.”
Season 3, Episode 3 – “Barbary Coast”
Soldier Boy seems resentful that people have forgotten him, but the reality is he was never truly a hero. A flashback to 1984 revealed this, showing his old team, Payback, interacting with a young Grace Mallory and demonstrating his flawed character.
Payback performed at a camp in Nicaragua as a sort of test run for military demonstrations, which upset Grace. During this event, Soldier Boy clearly demonstrated that, even back in 1984, he was disrespectful to women and didn’t listen to anyone in charge.
He said this directly to Mallory while showing off for the troops. Soldier Boy was recklessly firing a rocket launcher at the camp’s ammunition storage, even though Grace repeatedly told him to stop. He ignored her, continuing to flirt and fire the weapon. When he appeared to be fatally injured as a result of his behavior, Grace didn’t seem particularly concerned.
“”Man, I Missed Bennies. It’s How We Won D-Day.”
Season 3, Episode 6 – ‘Herogasm’
During a memorable scene in season 3 of The Boys, specifically the “Herogasm” episode, Soldier Boy revealed something he longed for from his past. While speaking with Billy Butcher and Hughie, he confessed he missed “bennies” – and shockingly claimed they were instrumental in the United States’ victory on D-Day.
Benzedrine, often called a ‘bennie,’ was once hailed as a wonder drug with potential to treat various illnesses. However, it began to cause fatal overdoses, leading to its classification as a controlled substance.
During World War II, Adolf Hitler provided his soldiers with pills containing the drug Pervitin. Millions of these were given to German troops before the 1940 invasion of France, according to History.com. The drug was a stimulant designed to keep soldiers alert, awake, and prepared for combat, though its effects weren’t lasting. Similar practices were reportedly used by the military allies of the character Soldier Boy.
No One’s The New Me, Pal.”
Season 3, Episode 6 – ‘Herogasm’
Billy Butcher was explaining the current state of the world to Soldier Boy, who then asked about Homelander, a hero he’d only seen in pictures. Billy simply told Soldier Boy, “He’s the new you.” This clearly irritated Soldier Boy, and he replied with a humorless response, almost as if it offended him to be compared to Homelander.
Soldier Boy is incredibly arrogant, convinced he’s the most powerful person around. Billy Butcher, however, understands the truth: both Soldier Boy and Homelander are truly villains, not heroes, and pose a significant threat. While Soldier Boy focuses on comparing power levels, Butcher sees a much bigger picture.
“Bill Cosby Is America’s Dad, And, Tell You One Thing, He Wouldn’t Be Caught Dead In That.”
Season 3, Episode 6 – ‘Herogasm’
Many of Soldier Boy’s scenes are purely for comedic effect. Like Captain America, he’s a man who’s been frozen in time, but unlike Cap, Soldier Boy hasn’t been gone as long. When he reappears, he’s unpleasant – prejudiced, sexist, and generally rude.
He’s also out of touch with recent history, unaware of many things that happened during his absence. There’s a funny moment where Soldier Boy is watching TV with Hughie and is shocked by something he sees. It’s a commercial featuring a father carrying his baby in a sling, and Soldier Boy asks if men actually do that. Hughie simply replies, “Dads do.”
That’s when Soldier Boy shockingly refers to Bill Cosby as “America’s Dad,” completely unaware of the accusations against him. Knowing Soldier Boy’s character, he likely wouldn’t be concerned even if he did know.
“I’m Not Going Back In That Fu**ing Box!”
Season 3, Episode 8 – “The Instant White-Hot Wild”
The season 3 finale of The Boys was insane! Everyone seemed to realize just how dangerous Soldier Boy was – maybe even more so than Homelander – and they were ready to take him on. So much happened, with Homelander trying to dominate everything, but the biggest moment for me was when Mother’s Milk figured out how to stop Soldier Boy. It was all thanks to Frenchie, who came up with this incredibly powerful dose of Novichok – seriously, that stuff was exactly what they needed to take Soldier Boy down.
Billy Butcher, Maeve, and Soldier Boy team up to confront Homelander, but the situation quickly changes when Homelander brings his son, Ryan, into the fight. Butcher then battles Soldier Boy, trying to protect Ryan. Just then, MM, Frenchie, and Kimiko arrive and attempt to recapture Soldier Boy. Realizing he’s about to be contained again, Soldier Boy reveals his deep fear and declares he’ll do anything – even destroy himself – to prevent it.
“I’m Red-Blooded. But Not Commie Red. Red-White-And-Blue Red.”
Gen-V, Season 1, Episode 6 – “Jumanji”
Soldier Boy appeared in the Gen V series, but not as fans might expect. This wasn’t the same Soldier Boy from The Boys; instead, it was a dreamlike version of the character. Marie, Jordan, Andre, and Dusty found themselves inside Cate’s mind shortly after discovering she was working for Dr. Edison Cardosa. While navigating Cate’s mental landscape, they encountered a surprising figure.
Soldier Boy arrived and immediately began insulting the group with shockingly crude language. He claimed to be a childhood imaginary friend of Cate’s, teaching her self-satisfaction, which deeply upset Marie. When Jordan accused him of being a Russian operative, Soldier Boy exploded and delivered a powerful statement about his own principles. The scene ended with him attempting to assist the group before being unexpectedly destroyed – a brief but memorable appearance for the Gen-V character.
“Did You F**K Me? Is This Some Kinda Incest Thing?”
Season 5, Episode 2, “Teenage Kix”
Soldier Boy is understandably confused when he wakes up in Homelander’s bed, immediately questioning what happened and if Homelander has a disturbing interest in his father. While the dialogue is strong, it’s Jensen Ackles’ performance that truly makes the scene memorable.
He dismisses the idea of his son being sexually attracted to him as if it’s a small, unimportant issue. He even states it doesn’t even surprise him that his son would want to be intimate with him.
“What’s Black And White And Red All Over?”
Season 3, Episode 7 – ‘Here Comes A Candle To Light Your Bed’
I have to say, Soldier Boy absolutely killed it with his lines in season 3 – this moment, after he shoots a priest and a nun while looking for Mindstorm, was a perfect example. It wasn’t just funny because of how shocking it was, but because the answer to the riddle ended up being a newspaper. It’s a little detail, but it felt so fitting considering who he is – someone a bit old-fashioned and definitely past his prime.
The darkly humorous part, for him, is that the priest and nun he attacks wear black and white, and when he kills them, their blood creates a stark red contrast. This gruesome joke perfectly shows how cold and cruel he is, offering another clue to his identity. Soldier Boy is a ruthless killer who casually jokes about the people he murders.
“I Held Onto The Hope That You Would Come.”
Season 3, Episode 5 – ‘The Last Time To Look On This World Of Lies’
Soldier Boy is a terrible person throughout the season, but that doesn’t prevent viewers from connecting with him on an emotional level. This connection largely stems from his pursuit of Payback, particularly his complicated history with Crimson Countess. The scene where he learns the truth about what happened – and why he was handed over to the Russians by his old team – is incredibly tense and surprisingly moving, and Jensen Ackles delivers a fantastic performance.
Though it’s hard to sympathize with Soldier Boy overall, many viewers can connect with the pain of being rejected by someone he loved. This moment is one of the few times he shows genuine emotion, revealing a surprisingly human side. He quickly reverts to his awful behavior, but this vulnerable scene stands out.
“All I See Is A Freak. A Freak With A Bushel Of Gray Pubes.”
Season 5, Episode 3, “Every One of You Sons of B*tches”
What makes Soldier Boy such a great character is his unique ability to challenge Homelander. He’s one of the few who can openly mock and even fight Homelander without immediately facing deadly consequences, simply because he’s strong enough to actually give him a real battle.
Soldier Boy is a master at getting under Homelander’s skin, knowing precisely what to say to upset him. His comment about Homelander’s “gray pubes” – and the hilarious use of the word “bushel” – was a truly memorable scene.
