Fans will find out who the next Doctor will be very soon. Russell T Davies, the showrunner for Doctor Who, has said the announcement is coming in the next few weeks.
Davies announced on BBC Radio 2 that a press release is coming soon. He said it’s currently being finalized within the BBC and should be published within a week or two.
Explaining the delay – the last episode of Doctor Who, “The Reality War,” came out over a year ago, on May 31, 2025 – Russell Davies pointed out that making decisions for a long-running show like Doctor Who is a lengthy process. He joked that even as he said it, he could feel things slowing down, knowing how the system works, and that 57 people need to approve every line of dialogue.
Doctor Who’s 16th Doctor Will Be Revealed Soon
The future of Doctor Who has been uncertain since its last season ended, especially because that also marked the end of the show’s collaboration with Disney+. While fans have been waiting for news, the only confirmed plans are a Christmas special, and the BBC’s commitment to continuing the long-running sci-fi series – which has been on the air for over 60 years.
The latest change in who plays the Doctor has caused some surprise. Ncuti Gatwa, who unexpectedly finished his run as the Doctor, regenerated at the end of “The Reality War” into Billie Piper. Piper is well-known to Doctor Who fans, having previously played Rose Tyler, the Doctor’s companion, and also a significant role in the show’s 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.”
Piper has said her appearance in “The Reality War” came together very quickly, and she isn’t even certain what her character’s future holds. Fans are now wondering if she’s playing a new version of the Doctor – is she the Sixteenth Doctor, a Doctor who doesn’t get a number like the War Doctor, or something completely different?
The 16th Doctor’s Identity May Reveal Doctor Who’s Fate
Davies’ comments seem to be about who will play the next Doctor, but this announcement will likely give us some clues about the future of Doctor Who overall. With rumors of the show being put on hold, simply knowing a new Doctor has been cast would reassure many worried fans.
Piper might appear in the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special as a temporary Doctor before passing the role on to the next main actor. This would be similar to how David Tennant returned for the show’s 60th anniversary specials before transforming into the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, for the series on Disney+.
It’s still early to say for sure, but fans are excited to find out if the new Doctor will return for another season of Doctor Who, as one hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. Good news for fans: AMC+ will soon be streaming most of the show’s recent seasons (though Ncuti Gatwa’s seasons will remain on Disney+). It’s still unclear if AMC+ will stream any future seasons, if they are made.
