2026 promises to be a huge year for superhero films, with Marvel planning new movies for Spider-Man and the Avengers, and DCU focusing on Supergirl and Clayface. This follows a decade that’s already given us some fantastic superhero movies, like those featuring Spider-Man and Batman, all of which deserve recognition.
The 2020s were a significant decade for superhero films, showing a clear evolution of the genre. Initially, movies relied heavily on fan-pleasing cameos and memorable moments. However, the decade shifted towards films prioritizing strong themes and compelling stories. It’s difficult to think about the 2020s without considering movies like The Batman and the upcoming Thunderbolts as prime examples of this change.
Fans Got the Perfect Reunion in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
The Spider-Man movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe faced a challenge: fans often pointed out similarities to Iron Man, and Peter Parker didn’t experience the same struggles as his comic book counterpart. Spider-Man: No Way Home addressed this by looking back at Peter’s history, ultimately allowing for a portrayal more closely aligned with the original comic book character.
Pete’s journey in the film was incredibly complex – he battled iconic villains like Doc Ock and the Green Goblin, teamed up with Spider-Men played by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, and then had everyone, including MJ, forget who he was. Despite all this, the movie handled it brilliantly, finally delivering the live-action, multiversal Spider-Man adventure fans had been hoping for. Beyond that, it successfully re-introduced characters like Matt Murdock, paid respect to previous Spider-Man films, and positioned Peter for a promising future, especially during a huge year for superhero movies.
The Batman (2022) Remains the Best Iteration of the Character
Before Matt Reeves directed The Batman, it felt like no live-action version of the character had fully captured what makes him great. Ben Affleck’s Batman looked the part, but was a killer, and Christian Bale’s focused on being a symbol rather than the detective fans expect. The Batman was the first time we saw a version that successfully blended all those key elements.
Driven by a detective story, The Batman presented a fresh take on the Dark Knight – one who was still learning and existed apart from the typical superhero world. This version of Batman resonated deeply with fans, becoming the most compelling cinematic portrayal of the character to date, and leading to widespread desire for its inclusion in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, even if as a standalone story. Ultimately, The Batman stands out as the year’s best superhero film because it finally captured the essence of the character.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) Sticks a Difficult Landing
As a critic, I’ve seen a lot of trilogies stumble at the finish line – it’s a tough feat, honestly. Few stick the landing like The Lord of the Rings did. And while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 isn’t flawless, I was really struck by how beautifully it built upon the first film while also returning to a core emotional simplicity. At its heart, this is a story about friendship and rescue. We see the Guardians desperately trying to save Rocket Raccoon’s life, and through that, we finally get to understand his heartbreaking origin story and the horrific experiments he endured at the hands of the High-Evolutionary.
While both were great films, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 resonated more in 2023 because it focused on a deeply personal story rather than a massive, universe-ending event. The Guardians weren’t trying to save the galaxy itself, but their own little family, and Rocket’s story beautifully tied everything together, leading to a satisfying and emotional conclusion for the team.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Was a Diamond in an Otherwise Tough Year
Superhero movies had a difficult year in 2024, so even an average film could easily rise to the top. Deadpool & Wolverine took a unique approach, acting as both a celebration of past movies and a way to finally deliver what fans have always wanted. Like previous Deadpool films, it centers on his efforts to protect those he cares about, but this time, instead of globe-trotting or time travel, the adventure takes him across the multiverse with Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine – and sporting the iconic yellow suit fans have been waiting for.
The movie is a great story, finally explaining the reasons behind Deadpool’s costume and giving Wolverine a compelling journey back to heroism. More than that, it’s a perfect tribute to the superhero films of the early 2000s – the ones that paved the way for the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a movie you can’t help but enjoy, regardless of when it came out.
Thunderbolts* (2025) Elevates Past a Superhero Movie Into Something More
Superhero movies in 2025 really made audiences consider what it truly means to be a hero, proving that you don’t need superpowers to make a difference. The Fantastic 4: First Steps highlighted the power of teamwork, and the new Superman film demonstrated that heroes come in all forms. However, Thunderbolts went even deeper, exploring how being a hero can be about discovering your purpose and finding personal satisfaction.
Unlike typical superhero stories, Thunderbolts isn’t about grand heroism; it’s about flawed characters doing what’s right without seeking glory. It’s essentially the opposite of an Avengers movie, and that’s what makes it stand out. The film resonates with those feeling uncertain or fearful, reminding us that even small steps forward are meaningful. It’s a remarkably honest take on the superhero genre, and that honesty makes it a strong contender for the best superhero film of the year, because it acknowledges that heroes must first overcome their own struggles before they can help others.
