Even though the movie isn’t out until 2027, we already know several major villains will be in Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2. The sequel will continue the dark and realistic style of the first film, bringing Robert Pattinson back as Batman. While the full story is still a secret, some interesting details have started to appear online.
The upcoming Batman movie will feature a number of classic villains. So far, five members of Batman’s most notorious enemies have been confirmed to appear in the film.
Filming for The Batman 2 is planned to begin later in 2024, and the movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Director Matt Reeves will be back to lead the project, and he’s co-written the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin.
Every Villain Confirmed for The Batman 2
Penguin

Colin Farrell will reprise his role as the Penguin, the memorable crime boss from the first Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson, in the next installment of the series.
Colin Farrell has publicly expressed his desire to reprise his role in The Batman 2. According to industry insider John Rocha, his character is expected to appear, even in a minor capacity, in the planned 2027 sequel. However, his co-star Cristin Milioti, who plays The Penguin, might not be returning for the film.
In an interview on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast in October 2025, Colin Farrell directly confirmed he would be participating in The Batman 2. He praised the script by director Matt Reeves, calling it “a masterwork” and “so brilliant.”
I had a lot to tell Matt about the script – I honestly think it’s a fantastic piece of work, a real standout in its genre. It’s incredibly well-written, and the story Robert has is a beautiful one that will really resonate with audiences.
This follows Colin Farrell’s successful role in The Penguin, a spin-off series from The Batman. The show explores what happened to his character in the weeks and months after the original film’s release.
Joker

Although The Joker wasn’t a major character in the first The Batman film, director Matt Reeves still presented his own unique version of the iconic comic book villain in that movie, setting the stage for his DC crime story.
Barry Keoghan, known for his role in Eternals, portrays a strikingly different Joker in this version. He appears opposite Robert Pattinson’s Batman, with a severely scarred face and a frighteningly intimidating voice.
I’m hearing from Jeff Sneider, a really reliable source, that Barry Keoghan is definitely coming back as the Joker in the next Batman sequel! Apparently, we can expect a whole bunch of villains in the movie, and he’ll be one of them.
Okay, so I’ve been following the buzz, and it sounds like even though the Joker is in the sequel, he’s not going to be the main villain. Back in 2022, Matt Reeves actually talked about where the Joker fits in this Batman world, and he described him as an early version of the character – a “pre-Joker” Joker, if that makes sense. He’s definitely not the fully formed, chaotic force we see in movies like The Dark Knight or even Tim Burton’s original Batman.
As a movie fan, what really struck me about that scene was seeing a version of the Joker before he fully became the Joker. I almost cut it, actually – I’d already removed another scene earlier in the film. But I put it back in for test screenings, and I realized it was crucial. It really wraps up the Riddler’s story, showing where he ends up after Batman stops his plans, and it gives his arc a satisfying conclusion.
Harvey Dent

I’m really excited about the news that Sebastian Stan is joining the cast of The Batman 2! He’s going to play Harvey Dent, and for those of us who follow the DC comics, we know that Dent doesn’t stay a good guy for long. He starts out as the District Attorney, but things definitely change for him.
Following a horrific accident that severely scarred half of his face, Harvey Dent transforms into the villain Two-Face and begins to deliver his own twisted version of justice, causing widespread chaos in Gotham City.
News that Stan joined the movie came out in early January, though details about his character were initially a secret. Shortly after, Jeff Sneider hinted online that the actor would be playing the famous comic book district attorney. It’s still unknown if the actor will portray the character’s severe injuries in the film, but his casting adds another villain to the DC Universe.
Christopher Dent

According to Deadline’s Justin Kroll, Christopher will reportedly play Harvey Dent’s father in The Batman 2, joining Sebastian Stan in the sequel. Kroll revealed this information during a recent episode of the My Mom’s Basement podcast.
According to Kroll, there’s one major role still to be filled for the upcoming DC movie. Many believe this will be an older character, likely Harvey Dent’s father.
As a comics fan, I’ve always found Christopher Dent to be a truly disturbing figure. He’s Harvey Dent’s father, and while he doesn’t have a flashy villain name, his abuse is the real source of Two-Face’s tragedy. It’s chilling to learn that the infamous coin flip actually originated with him – he’d flip a coin to decide whether or not to physically harm young Harvey. It’s a deeply unsettling origin story that really underscores the trauma behind the villain.
Scarlett Johansson’s Mystery Character

Scarlett Johansson, famous for her roles in Marvel movies, is the latest actor confirmed to join the cast of The Batman 2. While details about her character are currently secret, she’s set to play a new, currently unknown, villain in the sequel.
There’s a rumor that Scarlett Johansson might join the upcoming Batman film as a new love interest for Bruce Wayne. Some fans speculate she could also be a villain, and believe her character might be Andrea Beaumont, also known as Phantasm, a character popular from the animated film Mask of the Phantasm.
Some fans believe the actress might play Gilda Dent, the wife of Harvey Dent. Gilda is a well-known character in the comics, especially in the popular story The Long Halloween, where she briefly became a serial killer known as Holiday.
