Apple TV+’s Shrinking might not be their biggest hit, but it’s a truly excellent and often overlooked dramedy. With so much content available across all streaming platforms, it’s easy for great shows to get lost in the shuffle.
Many Apple TV+ subscribers are familiar with Ted Lasso, which is probably the service’s most popular comedy. However, fewer have watched the darkly comedic Irish series Bad Sisters. This isn’t too surprising, as Bad Sisters, while critically acclaimed, doesn’t feature the same level of famous actors as Ted Lasso.
Shrinking Season 3 Has Been Great So Far
I really loved Shrinking when it came out in 2023, and critics seemed to agree it was great! It stars Jason Segel as a therapist, Jimmy Laird, who’s dealing with the loss of his wife. He starts breaking all the rules and really getting involved in his patients’ lives, which leads to some funny and touching moments. But honestly, I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten more attention – it deserves to be way more popular than it is!
Harrison Ford plays Dr. Paul Rhodes, a coworker of Jimmy’s who is dealing with a Parkinson’s diagnosis. The show also features strong performances from Jessica Williams and Michael Urie, with guest appearances by well-known actors like Jeff Daniels, Kelly Bishop, Wendie Malick, Neil Flynn, and Lily Rabe.
What Makes Shrinking So Compelling
Okay, I’ll admit, part of the fun of watching Shrinking is trying to figure out who the next celebrity cameo will be! But honestly, that’s not the main reason I keep watching. What really gets me is how the show doesn’t just mention Jimmy’s grief and move on – it actually deals with it. It doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff he’s going through, even when things are funny. It feels really real and honest, and that’s what keeps me hooked.
Rhodes, played by Ford, could have easily been a typical grumpy-but-kind mentor. However, the actor brings a surprising depth and genuine emotion to the role. His realistic portrayal of dealing with a difficult diagnosis makes the show’s humor feel authentic and meaningful, rather than overly sweet or contrived.
More People Should Be Watching Shrinking
Thanks to streaming, a big star like Harrison Ford and a familiar face like Jason Segel were able to star in a critically praised show, Shrinking, for three seasons without becoming a widespread hit. It’s a shame, really, because more people deserve to see this series.
With the return of Bill Lawrence’s beloved sitcom Scrubs on the horizon, now is a great time to discover – or revisit – this often-overlooked show. New viewers have three seasons to enjoy, but a quick note: maybe don’t take the therapy advice from Shrinking too much to heart!
