Harriet Slater, an actress known from shows like Pennyworth, appeared in a surprisingly successful 2024 film called Tarot. Despite a small $8 million budget, the movie earned nearly $42 million worldwide. It also featured Jacob Batalon, famous for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avantika, who starred in Mean Girls.
The horror film Tarot will leave Netflix on February 1st, giving fans just a few weeks left to watch it. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews from critics (a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie performed well in theaters, ranking fourth in its opening weekend in May 2024.
This horror movie is a supernatural slasher based on Nicholas Adams’ 1992 novel, Horrorscope. It follows a group of college students who find a strange Tarot deck and begin to die in ways that were predicted by their cards. The story centers around the consequences of breaking a key rule of Tarot: never use a deck that doesn’t belong to you. When they ignore this warning, they unleash a terrifying evil and must fight for their lives against the fate the cards have predicted.
Tarot Star: It’s ‘A Very Great Story’
Jacob Batalon shared his thoughts on the film Tarot, suggesting it stood out from current horror movies. He pointed out the growing popularity of astrology, tarot cards, and palm reading among younger generations, making the film a smart choice from a business perspective. However, he also emphasized that the story itself is genuinely compelling.
Despite having a small budget, the movie Tarot was a massive success, earning $49.1 billion at the box office. Batalon predicted the film would be popular with horror audiences even before it came out.
Batalon described the project as a unique direction for the horror genre. He was particularly drawn to the film’s focus on spirituality and tarot, noting that while many horror movies explore supernatural themes, jump scares, or real-life events, this one delves into a relatively unexplored area. He felt this fresh approach was the most compelling aspect of the project.
Tarot is streaming on Netflix until it is removed from the platform on Feb. 1.
