Taika Waititi Developing New Comedy for Hulu

Taika Waititi, the mind behind What We Do In The Shadows, will continue working with Hulu on a new comedy series. He’s signed an agreement with 20th Television, FX Productions, and Hulu to develop original projects for the streaming service.

Taika Waititi is working on a new half-hour comedy for Hulu called Last Look. He’s developing the show with Jason Kim, who also worked on Barry. Both Waititi and Kim are writing and executive producing the series.

As a movie and TV buff, I’d describe this show as a really fun, modern take on the classic ‘upstairs/downstairs’ dynamic. But instead of a grand estate, it’s set in the glamorous world of high fashion! It focuses on the people who actually make the clothes happen – the hardworking team behind the scenes – and the larger-than-life designers who create the looks. It sounds like a hilarious look at both sides of that world.

FX Continues Partnership With Taika Waititi

What We Do In The Shadows was a funny TV series that aired for six seasons on FX. It started as a 2014 movie from New Zealand created by Taika Waititi. The show follows four vampires who share a house together in Staten Island. It was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series four times.

The series stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, Mark Proksch, and Kristen Schaal. It’s loosely based on Mel Brooks’ classic 1974 film, Young Frankenstein, and Brooks is involved as an executive producer with his longtime collaborator, Kevin Salter.

Alongside the existing team from What We Do In The Shadows, Stefanie Robinson and Garrett Basch join Very Young Frankenstein as executive producers. Robinson is also leading the series as showrunner. The pilot episode has been well-received and is currently being finalized in post-production.

What Is the Status of Taika Waititi’s Star Wars Movie?

Taika Waititi, who is currently working on many projects, is also developing a Star Wars film for Lucasfilm. The movie was first announced in 2020, and progress has been slow. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently mentioned they are waiting for Waititi to deliver a script.

Kathleen Kennedy recently told Deadline that they’re still hoping to work with Taika Waititi on a project, but his busy schedule makes it difficult. He’s currently collaborating with another writer. Kennedy expressed her enthusiasm for his work, mentioning she really enjoyed the first act of a script he’d already shared, but getting him committed to a full project is proving challenging.

In 2023, Taika Waititi mentioned he was developing the project and wanted to ensure it met his vision before releasing it.

I’ve been working on that project for several years now. With any film, but especially this one, I really want to make sure it’s done well, so I’m not going to rush the process. It’s something I’m developing at a comfortable pace, and I’m excited about how it’s going,” he explained on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2023.
