Director Edgar Wright recently shared news about his upcoming film, Barbarella, which will star Sydney Sweeney. Barbarella originated as a French comic book in 1962 and is most famous as a movie starring Jane Fonda. Remakes of Barbarella have been considered for over two decades, but the project gained momentum when Sydney Sweeney was cast in 2022 and Edgar Wright signed on to direct last year.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, director Edgar Wright discussed his feelings about comic book movies after leaving Marvel’s Ant-Man. He admitted that his experience with Ant-Man initially made him hesitant about superhero films, but he clarified he’s still open to working on other comic book adaptations. He’d actually like to do another one. While Wright didn’t say if Barbarella would be his next film, he did share that his vision for it would be more inspired by the original French comics than the well-known 1968 movie.
If a remake were to happen, it would likely be a fresh take on the original story. I really enjoyed the source material, and I saw it at the perfect age – I was probably a bit young for it! The script is by Terry Southern, and his unique style is definitely noticeable throughout. When the writing is at its best, it’s fantastic. Visually, it’s stunning, and it’s both playful and challenges the norm. The original books are also wonderful – beautifully written, incredibly imaginative, and ahead of their time.
Sydney Sweeney & Edgar Wright’s Box Office Problems

Sony Pictures
Edgar Wright’s latest film, The Running Man, didn’t perform as well as hoped at the box office, opening with $16 million and landing in second place behind Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Considering its $110 million budget and upcoming competition from films like Wicked: For Good, it’s likely to be a financial disappointment for Wright, and has also received somewhat negative reviews. Actress Sydney Sweeney is also coming off a film that underperformed, adding to a trend of recent releases not meeting expectations.
Sydney Sweeney has had a noticeable 2024, though not all the attention has been positive. While the film Anyone But You proved she can attract audiences, other movies like Eden, Echo Valley, and Christy weren’t financially successful. Christy, which was hoped to be an awards contender, only made $1.3 million on its opening weekend – one of the twelve worst openings for a film released in over 2,000 theaters. Things got worse the following week when it dropped 91.7%, resulting in the worst second-weekend box office performance ever. Adding to the challenges, an American Eagle Outfitters ad featuring her, with the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has Great Jeans,” unexpectedly became a topic of political discussion.
Sydney Sweeney has a good relationship with Sony Pictures, the studio planning a new version of Barbarella. However, it’s not certain if the project will actually happen. If it does move forward with director Edgar Wright, Sony will probably be careful with the budget after their recent film, The Running Man, didn’t perform as well as hoped. Barbarella could be a big opportunity for both Sweeney and Wright to revitalize their careers.
