The next DC Universe movie, Supergirl, is coming out in just a few months. Fans are already wondering what will happen after that, and we know a sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, is planned for 2027. While the first movie introduced us to key characters like David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, many other important DC characters still haven’t been cast or had their roles defined.
As a huge DC fan, I’ve been following the casting news for the next movie closely. This week, a list of actresses supposedly being considered for Maxima started circulating, but James Gunn quickly shut that down on social media. But honestly, it was only a few hours later that The Hollywood Reporter dropped a new list! This time, the names included Adria Arjona (you might know her from Star Wars: Andor), Sydney Chandler (Alien: Earth), Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), and Grace Van Patten (The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox). It’s all a bit confusing, but definitely exciting to see who they’re thinking about!
It’s curious that James Gunn denied rumors about Adria Arjona, but his statement didn’t completely exclude her from consideration for the role. He specifically said he hadn’t met Marisa Abela or Ella Purnell, who were reported as leading candidates, but regarding Arjona, he only mentioned their long-standing friendship stemming from her appearance in Belko Experiment. It’s therefore uncertain whether Gunn deliberately misled people or simply clarified his existing relationship with Arjona.
David Corenswet, Jacob Elordi, and Rachel Brosnahan will reprise their roles in the upcoming sequel. Joining them are Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. Lars Eidinger will play Brainiac, and Aaron Pierre, known for his work in Lanterns, will make his first appearance as John Stewart in a film.
A possible issue is that Chandler will begin filming season two of Alien: Earth in London in May, which might make it difficult for them to participate in this project.
Maxima first appeared in Action Comics #645, created by Roger Stern and George Pérez. She has a complex relationship with Superman, often shifting between being an enemy and a possible romantic partner – a situation that would definitely complicate things with Lois Lane.
