Legendary and Mythical Pokémon are usually the strongest in any area and time period. This is because they’re either incredibly rare and connected to the natural world, or the result of experiments that pushed scientific boundaries. But even common Pokémon can sometimes compete with these powerful creatures.
Top non-Legendary Pokémon stand out thanks to their great stats, useful types, and strong moves. This list highlights one excellent Pokémon from each generation of games, plus one from the newest game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Snorlax Proved Normal-Types Could Stand Up To Psychics In Gen 1
Okay, so just because Psychic-types were super strong in the first generation games doesn’t mean they always won. A few Normal-types could really give them a run for their money, and Snorlax was a major one – seriously, that thing was a beast!
Snorlax was incredibly durable, able to take a lot of damage and then fully heal itself with Rest. It could powerfully strike back with Body Slam, often paralyzing opponents, and had Counter to effectively deal with powerful physical attackers like Machamp. Once Snorlax was in battle, it was very difficult to defeat.
Tyranitar Broke Enemies Down Into Grains Of Sand
Early in the Pokémon world, Psychic-type Pokémon were incredibly powerful. Tyranitar emerged as a key counter to them, thanks to its Dark-type abilities, which gave it an advantage against the dominant Pokémon of the Kanto region. As a Dark and Ground-type, Tyranitar was a powerful attacker with access to some of the strongest moves available.
Tyranitar was a powerful Pokémon in Generation 2, largely thanks to its move Rock Slide. This attack dealt massive damage, especially because it benefited from a STAB bonus and could even make opponents flinch, costing them a turn. Combined with another strong STAB move, Crunch, Tyranitar could easily defeat many different teams. Despite being relatively slow, it remained one of the best Pokémon in the generation.
Metagross Crushed The Opposition With An Amazing Move Pool
As a huge Pokémon fan, I always thought Metagross was amazing! It felt like the ultimate blend of powerful attacks and solid defense. Plus, its movepool was just fantastic. Once it started using Meteor Mash, it was a real problem for opponents – not only was it strong, but there was a chance it would boost Metagross’s Attack even further, making it incredibly difficult to stop!
Metagross was incredibly powerful and difficult to defeat due to its strong defense. Luckily, Groudon appeared in this generation to counter it, as it was one of the few Pokémon capable of overcoming Metagross in battle.
Garchomp Hit Harder Than The Rest Of Sinnoh
Garchomp’s design may be a bit older, but it’s still incredibly powerful. It actually became even more threatening with the introduction of its fantastic Mega Evolution in newer games.
Garchomp’s combination of Dragon and Ground types lets it use powerful moves like Earthquake, Dragon Claw, and Outrage with increased damage. It’s naturally very strong offensively, so opponents often take a lot of damage if they can withstand its attacks. Garchomp is a well-rounded Pokémon, and even the introduction of the Fairy type in Pokémon X & Y didn’t significantly weaken it, as many Fairy-types still struggled to survive against it.
Hydreigon Was The Darkness Dragon The Franchise Needed
It’s a bit unexpected that the series didn’t combine Dark and Dragon types earlier, given how well they complement each other. Fans had been hoping for a Pokémon like Hydreigon for a long time to satisfy their desire for a creature inspired by Fire Emblem.
Hydreigon is a powerful Pokémon, particularly with its incredibly strong Special Attack, allowing it to unleash devastating moves like Draco Meteor. It also has a solid defensive type, letting it withstand many common attacks. However, it’s unfortunate that Pokémon Black & White featured so many Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, which overshadowed other strong Pokémon like Hydreigon.
Aegislash Is The Master Of Defense and Offense
It was tough to decide between Greninja and Aegislash, since both react quickly to opponents’ attacks. Ultimately, Aegislash edges out Greninja thanks to its fantastic King’s Shield move. If an opponent tries to attack while King’s Shield is active, their Attack power can be lowered, making it arguably the best defensive move in the game.
When you need to strike hard, activating this ability dramatically increases your attack power, guaranteeing a devastating blow. It’s a great way to surprise your opponent and disrupt their strategy, potentially turning the tide of battle.
Pheremosa Was An Unstoppable Ultra Beast
While the Alola region seemed like a beautiful island getaway, it actually harbored some truly terrifying creatures inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft – strange beings from another world with power comparable to the strongest Pokémon.
While several Ultra Beasts are incredibly powerful, Pheromosa stands out as the most dangerous. It’s exceptionally fast and hits incredibly hard, usually defeating opponents before they even have a chance to react. And if Pheromosa faces a tough matchup, it can quickly switch out of battle and let another Pokémon take its place.
Dracovish Is The Ultimate Fossil Pokémon
Throughout the Pokémon series, some fossil Pokémon have been quite successful, but most haven’t made a big impact. However, Pokémon Sword & Shield introduced Dracovish, a remarkably powerful Pokémon that even played a key role in Ash Ketchum’s journey to becoming a Champion in the anime.
Dracovish isn’t known for having particularly high stats, but its combination of the Strong Jaw ability and the Fishious Rend attack is incredibly powerful – Strong Jaw significantly increases the damage of Fishious Rend. Combined with its Water/Dragon typing, which boosts the power of several strong attacks, Dracovish was a remarkably effective Pokémon for quickly defeating opponents, particularly when it was first popular.
Annihilape Brought A Weak Gen 1 Pokémon Back From The Grave
Primeape and its evolution weren’t particularly strong in the early Pokémon games, mainly helping players defeat Brock with Charmander. It consistently fell short compared to other Fighting-type Pokémon. However, like Goku from Dragon Ball Z, Primeape received a significant boost with the introduction of its new form, becoming a Fighting and Ghost-type Pokémon.
Annihilape is a powerful Pokémon in battle. It uses Drain Punch to heal itself and then follows up with Rage Fist, which grows stronger every time Annihilape is hit. It can also use moves that boost its stats, making it an incredibly dangerous opponent and finally living up to the potential of its evolutionary line after many years.
Mega Skarmory Is Dominating Lumiose City
Skarmory was a great Pokémon when it first came out in Generation 2, but it was difficult to obtain until near the end of the game, so many players didn’t get to use it. The new game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, has revitalized Skarmory, making it one of the strongest Pokémon in the series.
As a Skarmory fan, I’m so excited about Mega Skarmory! It gets this new ability, Stalwart, which basically stops opponents from redirecting its moves – pretty cool, right? But the real game-changer is how much stronger it’s become. Regular Skarmory was already known for taking a beating, but Mega Skarmory is seriously powerful now, and I can’t wait to see it in action in both Pokémon Champions and the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A! It’s going to be a real force to be reckoned with.
