Star Wars reportedly isn’t letting writers tell stories about one specific Legends character.
Since Disney bought Lucasfilm and revised the official Star Wars storyline, some characters and ideas from the older “Legends” stories have been reintroduced. A prime example is Grand Admiral Thrawn, a popular character who first appeared in Timothy Zahn’s 1991 novel Heir to the Empire. He later showed up in season 3 of Star Wars Rebels, sparking discussions about which other characters from Legends might make a comeback.
At the MegaCon 2026 panel discussing writing for the Star Wars universe, author Claudia Gray revealed that she repeatedly questioned the decision not to include the character Mara Jade, but was firmly told “no.” Timothy Zahn, also on the panel, confirmed he had made the same request, but was also denied permission to use her.
Like Thrawn, the character of Mara Jade first appeared in the novel Heir to the Empire, created by author Timothy Zahn. Initially, she was a dangerous assassin and secret agent, known as the Emperor’s Hand, with a final mission from Palpatine to kill Luke Skywalker. However, her story evolved, and she eventually became a Jedi, married Luke, and had a son named Ben Skywalker.
The fact that Gray and Zahn weren’t permitted to include Mara Jade in their stories, making her officially part of the Star Wars universe, suggests two main things. First, Lucasfilm might have completely ruled out making her canon. This fits with George Lucas’ original plans for the sequels, which didn’t feature her. Apparently, Lucas didn’t care for the character, particularly the idea of her marrying Luke, as it went against the Jedi Order’s teachings about forming attachments.
It’s possible Lucasfilm has long-term plans to officially include Mara Jade in the Star Wars universe, and for now, they don’t want other writers creating their own interpretations of her. As the Star Wars story expands with new books and comics happening before, during, and after the films, a spot may already be reserved for her. This isn’t uncommon – Lucasfilm has sometimes restricted authors from using certain characters if those characters have future roles planned for the movies or TV shows.
If Mara Jade is officially added to the current Star Wars storyline, some aspects of her character will likely be different from her original portrayal in the older ‘Legends’ stories, just like what happened with Grand Admiral Thrawn. Any romantic connection she might have had with Luke Skywalker would need to be adjusted to fit with how Luke’s story has developed since Return of the Jedi. Timothy Zahn would be the perfect writer to handle this, because he not only created Mara Jade, but he’s also successfully bridged the gap between the old ‘Legends’ universe and the current canon with his recent Thrawn novels.
The fact that both Zahn and Gray were interested in writing about Mara Jade naturally leads to wondering about their plans for her. While Zahn’s focus was likely tied to his Thrawn novels, Gray has written stories throughout the entire Star Wars timeline—from the High Republic era, centuries before The Phantom Menace, to Bloodline, which takes place six years before The Force Awakens. This makes it harder to determine when and where she intended to incorporate the character.
