The latest episode of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, titled “Pride and Vengeance,” ended with a surprising twist that’s quickly made the series a fan favorite. After failing to capture Maul and his crew, Janix’s forces were stunned to learn the Galactic Empire had arrived, called in by Two-Boots. The episode concluded with a looming Star Destroyer approaching Janix, accompanied by the ominous Imperial March theme, leaving viewers eager to see what happens next.
As a big sci-fi fan, I was initially getting a classic Star Wars droid vibe from Two-Boots in Shadow Lord – think C-3PO or K-2SO, all witty banter and helpfulness. But honestly, his choice to bring in the Empire totally changed things, giving him a much darker side. It reminded me of Brander Lawson’s warnings; he was right to fear the Empire coming to Janix, knowing they’d never leave and would just use any trouble as an excuse to take control. And it’s exactly the same setup we saw with Ferrix in the first season of Andor – that creeping Imperial presence, promising order but really just wanting power. It’s a familiar, and frankly unsettling, story beat.
The Empire’s Presence Always Spells Trouble in Star Wars
At the beginning of the series Andor, both Janix and Ferrix were governed by the Empire, but the Empire largely let the Preox-Morlana Corporation manage Ferrix. When Cassian Andor began to create problems the local government couldn’t control, the Imperial Security Bureau intervened. They took control of the streets, intimidating the people of Ferrix, and anyone thought to be helping Cassian was harshly interrogated.
After disappearing, Ferrix was reportedly destroyed by the ISB, as mentioned in Season 2’s “Messenger” episode. Now, it seems Two-Boots has set Janix on a path to a similar destruction. The planets’ names – both two syllables ending in “ix” – likely highlight this connection intentionally. Andor clearly demonstrates just how devastating the Empire’s presence can be for a planet.
Shadow Lord and Andor Highlight Different Aspects of Star Wars
There’s a key difference between these two stories. While Andor focused on regular soldiers and rebels, Shadow Lord will prominently feature characters who can use the Force on both sides of the conflict. We’ve already seen characters like Maul, Devon Izara, and Eeko-Dio Daki, and the trailers suggest someone will be coming to hunt Maul down soon.
Fans are hoping to see Darth Vader and Maul meet in the upcoming Shadow Lord story. The Star Wars: Rebels episode “Twilight of the Apprentice” hinted at a shared history between them. Like the series Andor, Shadow Lord could explore how both the Jedi and Sith can really impact the galaxy’s political landscape, even with the Jedi largely gone.
Unlike most Star Wars shows, Andor intentionally stood apart in both its style and story. It avoided relying heavily on cameos or connections to other Star Wars content, except for its connection to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which it preceded. While critically acclaimed with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers felt it didn’t quite fit within the Star Wars universe. However, recent developments, particularly within Shadow Lord, have demonstrated why Andor is a crucial addition to the larger Star Wars story.
Although we probably won’t see Cassian Andor in animated Star Wars series, his experiences still fit the overall themes of the franchise. George Lucas once described Star Wars stories as being similar to poetry, explaining that they often echo previous events and character journeys. It remains to be seen how closely the story of Janix will resemble that of Ferrix.
