Robert Picardo, a well-known actor from the Star Trek franchise who reprised his role in the recently released Starfleet Academy series, has addressed the criticism the show has received. He recently discussed the negative reactions with fans online.
Actor Robert Picardo recently shared an old newspaper clipping on X (formerly Twitter) from when his show, Voyager, first aired. He pointed out that the show, now fondly remembered by fans, was actually labeled as “woke” – or “politically correct,” as it was called at the time – when it originally premiered. The post sparked a lot of discussion among Star Trek fans, particularly about Starfleet Academy, and Picardo responded to those who disagreed with the show’s direction.
Someone commented on the post, saying they had a source at CBS who claimed the show was deliberately being turned into a platform for political messaging. This person then addressed the creator directly, stating they knew Alex Kurtzman and believed the claims about his intentions were false. However, they encouraged the creator to offer their own ideas and create something new if they disagreed with the current direction, emphasizing their experience and expertise in science fiction.
Picardo shared a personal story about being initially offended by a film, responding to a fan’s criticism. He recalled refusing to watch The Godfather as a child, explaining that, as an Italian American, he worried it reinforced harmful stereotypes. He admitted he avoided the movie for years, but now considers it one of his favorites.
He expressed his disappointment with the negativity surrounding the show, explaining that he wished people would simply stop watching if they didn’t enjoy it. He felt it was sad that instead of just disengaging, some people actively tried to prevent others from watching, constantly criticizing and attempting to ruin the show for everyone else.
This isn’t about winning or losing, or trying to eliminate something you don’t like. It’s about having the freedom to choose what you enjoy. Instead of focusing on criticizing someone’s work, why not use that energy to create something positive yourself? If you think you have a better idea, submit it to CBS-Paramount – you have the skills to do it. I’d genuinely be interested in seeing what you come up with, so put your energy into building, not tearing down.
