Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 9 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, titled “300th Night.” The episode, directed by Jonathan Frakes and written by Kirsten Beyer (based on a story by Beyer and Kenneth Lin), reveals significant developments for a popular character. “300th Night” also concludes the first year of training for the cadets at Starfleet Academy in San Francisco.
Caleb Mir is facing a difficult end to the school year at Starfleet Academy. He doesn’t have a home to return to for the break and is still searching for his mother, Anisha Mir (played by Tatiana Maslany). However, things start to change when Series Acclimation Mil, or SAM (Kerrice Brooks), helps Caleb access hidden messages from his mom. These messages, which have been hidden for three years, reveal Anisha’s location on the planet Ukeck.
SAM refused to let Caleb attempt the dangerous journey to find his mother alone, so Genesis Lythe and Darem Raymi joined them for the unauthorized rescue operation. Throughout the ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, SAM acted differently, revealing new motivations and desires that suggest she’s changing from the person she once was.
Series Acclimation Mil Is Becoming A Different Character In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
In the ninth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Mil confronted Genesis, declaring, “You don’t know me or what I’m capable of.” This is fitting, as we’re only just getting to know this version of Mil. The original Mil passed away in the eighth episode, “The Life of the Stars,” when her creator deactivated her.
SAM 2.0 had a life quite unlike the first SAM. She grew up on Kasq for seventeen years and developed a father-daughter relationship with The Doctor, Robert Picardo. While possessing all the memories of her predecessor and looking exactly like her, SAM 2.0 faces the unique situation of returning to Starfleet Academy, where she’s remembered as someone else.
Genesis was stunned to hear that SAM had signed her up for a single room next semester. She was even more surprised to learn SAM enthusiastically helped Caleb steal a shuttle – something Caleb couldn’t have done without SAM’s tech skills to bypass the USS Athena’s security and navigate a fast route to Ukeck.
What we’ve seen so far is probably just the beginning of how Series Acclimation Mil has evolved since her first appearance in the early episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. While she still retains many of her original characteristics, this updated version of the character is also discovering new goals and paths for herself.
Why SAM’s Changes In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Are An Upgrade
The updates being made to Series Acclimation Mil are a positive move for Starfleet’s first holographic cadet. The original SAM was endearing and gained a following thanks to her unique personality, but she was essentially brand new. SAM was only created four months before starting at Starfleet Academy, meaning she had the appearance and basic programming of a teenager, but lacked real-world experience.
The new version of SAM is a more well-rounded person, and she has her father, The Doctor, to love and support her. However, because she remembers everything from her previous self, she struggles with self-acceptance, realizing she doesn’t like who she used to be. She wants to make amends for her past mistakes and become a better person, feeling ashamed of her earlier actions.
The original Sam was always lively and entertaining, but her energetic personality wouldn’t have been practical for a long period at Starfleet Academy, or as a Starfleet officer. This new version of Sam has grown up a bit and understands herself better, though she’s still a typical teenager who likes to test limits and challenge authority. Still, the genuine warmth she showed when she hugged Caleb on Ukeck proves that, at her core, she’s still the same Sam we all know and love.
It will be interesting to see how Star Trek: Starfleet Academy delves into SAM 2.0’s experience as the Emissary of Kasq. This new version of SAM recalls her past self’s journey of becoming an Emissary, similar to Captain Sisko, but may be better prepared to handle the challenging role of leading her people.
