Star Trek fans have gotten a first glimpse of a new starship Enterprise, and it’s being captained by an unexpected character. The ongoing comic series from IDW Publishing, Star Trek: Lower Decks, has also hinted at the existence of another alien species with their own spaceship.
The eighteenth issue of the Star Trek: Lower Decks comic came out on April 8th from IDW, wrapping up a storyline. During their adventure, the crew of the Cerritos unexpectedly encounters an Enterprise ship… with a crew of Ferengi! Captain Freeman is visibly shocked by this discovery, exclaiming it’s ‘the Ferengi Enterprise.’ Quog playfully responds, ‘We usually just say Enterprise, but… yeah, that’s right!’
Star Trek Lower Decks Comics Introduces a New Enterprise Into the Mix
It might seem surprising, but a Ferengi version of the Enterprise could be a funny addition to the Lower Decks comics. The Enterprise is a famous ship in the sci-fi series, having been captained by legendary figures like James Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, and Jonathan Archer on many exciting galactic adventures.
Okay, so the new Lower Decks comic is going to be amazing! Apparently, the Enterprise is right in the middle of a huge space battle with Captain Freeman and her crew, fighting off some seriously dangerous aliens. Starfleet doesn’t have a clue who these guys are yet, but they’re pretty sure they’re connected to all the people who’ve disappeared from the planet Laapeeria. I can’t wait to see what happens!
The mission is to destroy the powerful ship and rescue everyone from an entire planet, all while bringing Boimler and his team back home. It’s going to end with a big, emotional reunion, basically.
The Lower Decks Comics Are Based on the Hit Paramount+ Series
The idea of a Ferengi-focused Enterprise might seem unexpected to Star Trek fans, but it actually fits perfectly with Star Trek: Lower Decks. This adult animated sci-fi comedy premiered on Paramount+ in 2020 as part of Alex Kurtzman’s ongoing expansion of the Star Trek universe. It was the first animated Star Trek show in nearly 50 years, following 1974’s Star Trek: The Animated Series. The series was popular with viewers, lasting five seasons for a total of 50 episodes and receiving three nominations for Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
After Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy arrived, geared towards younger viewers. Since then, two more Star Trek shows have been released: Strange New Worlds, which features a new crew aboard the Enterprise in the 23rd century, and a more recent series that has sparked debate – it follows the first group of Starfleet cadets in over a century.
Even though the Lower Decks comic series recently ended with a funny surprise involving a Ferengi Enterprise, a new Enterprise comic is coming out later this year to celebrate Star Trek‘s 60th anniversary. This new series from IDW will follow a top-secret mission through space, and we’ll learn more details in the months ahead.
Star Trek: Lower Decks #18 is now available from IDW Publishing.
