Nintendo has finally revealed a first-party game for the Switch 2, and it features some well-known characters. However, the game’s announcement isn’t exactly showcasing the power of the new hardware in the best light, especially as it’s meant to be an exclusive title.
Nintendo surprised fans on May 6, 2026, by releasing a trailer for the new Star Fox game, set to launch on June 25, 2026. The trailer seemed designed to introduce the characters, almost like a test run for a Star Fox movie. It appears a film is already in the works at Illumination.
Star Fox For Nintendo Switch 2 Looks Pretty Bad
The trailer didn’t really impress me. The character designs, in particular, look bad – switching to a more realistic animal style was a poor choice. The characters in Star Fox seem like they’re from an old 90s CGI music video, with lifeless eyes and unnatural movements.
While the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be a powerful upgrade, the graphics in the recently shown Star Fox demo don’t seem to take full advantage of the new hardware. In fact, the game could likely have run well on the original Switch, or even the older Wii U.
Nintendo would have been better off sticking with its signature cartoon style. The version of Fox McCloud seen in earlier games is actually more appealing than the one in Star Fox. The current character designs are noticeably off, and this is especially true for characters like Slippy, who looks like a strangely lifelike robot lost in thought.
Star Fox Fans Want Something New
Another problem with Star Fox is that it’s essentially a remake of Star Fox 64, which has already been remade for the Nintendo DS. Plus, the original Star Fox 64 is currently available on Switch through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass, making this new version somewhat redundant.
Star Fox 64 remains a beloved game, and while it could benefit from updates, it’s been a fan favorite for years. Fans of the Star Fox series have been hoping for a completely new installment, particularly after Star Fox Zero didn’t meet expectations, but instead, they’ve received an enhanced version of a game they already know.
Why focus on disappointment with a new Star Fox game when a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is possible? Both games originally came out on the Nintendo 64, were updated for the Nintendo 3DS, and can still be enjoyed on modern systems.
While Star Fox 64 still holds up well today, Ocarina of Time could really benefit from a modern update. Compared to more recent games, it has some frustrating design choices, clunky controls, and other issues that make it harder to enjoy.
Many consider Ocarina of Time to be one of the best video games ever made, and while Star Fox 64 is great, it doesn’t quite reach that level. Nintendo would have been better off rebooting the Star Fox series, moving the story forward and embracing a more cartoonish style, especially after the success of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A simple remake of Star Fox 64 with darker, unsettling visuals just isn’t very appealing.
