Prior to the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline featuring villains like Scorpion and Tombstone, Spider-Noir will introduce numerous characters from Spider-Man’s comic book history. With ten episodes planned, the series has the space to include many well-known faces, and potentially one character we might not see reimagined anywhere else.
The animated series Spider-Noir benefits from being set in a different universe. This allows it to introduce lesser-known characters from Spider-Man’s world and present fresh interpretations of famous Marvel heroes and villains like Black Cat, Sandman, and Electro.
Giving creative teams this freedom might also open the door for other, unexpected characters to appear. Spider-Man has a large collection of villains to choose from – everything from obscure foes like the Enforcers to well-known ones like Rhino and the Lizard.
It looks like Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man, Ben Reilly, will face a lot of villains in the series. The comics also suggest possibilities for characters who aren’t clearly good or evil, which could lead to enemies becoming allies or having complex storylines.
You know, I’ve always been a fan of the original Prowler. It’s a shame we haven’t seen much movement on getting him into a live-action movie, but honestly, Spider-Noir feels like a really smart way to finally make that happen. It gives them a believable way to bring him in, which is awesome.
Why Future Spider-Man Movies Are Unlikely To Include Hobie Brown’s Prowler
The Prowler is a long-standing character in Spider-Man stories, first appearing as a resourceful young Black teenager who resorted to crime to support his mother. Initially known as “the Prowler,” he began as one of Spider-Man’s foes, but it soon became apparent that he was fundamentally a good person.
He’s frequently battled Spider-Man, but usually ends up fighting alongside him as an ally, driven by a strong sense of right and wrong.
For years, Prowler has been seen in a certain light, but Marvel began to shift that perception in 2011. They introduced a new version of the Prowler, Aaron Davis, who became an important part of the story for the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales.
Aaron Davis’s version of the Prowler appeared in the movie that introduced Miles Morales, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Hobie Brown wasn’t left out either; the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, featured a version of him called Spider-Punk, a character Marvel first created in 2015.
Spider-Punk became much more popular after Across the Spider-Verse, and is now widely known as Hobie Brown, rather than being remembered as the Prowler. These days, people generally think of Aaron Davis when they hear the name ‘Prowler,’ not Hobie Brown.
The Into the Spider-Verse films have significantly impacted how we view these characters. Because of that, it’s now difficult to picture a traditional, live-action version of Hobie Brown’s Prowler appearing in a Spider-Man movie.
If Hobie Brown ever shows up in a Marvel movie, he’d likely take a lot of inspiration from his Spider-Punk persona. Similarly, if the Prowler character appears, Aaron Davis would be the most logical choice to play the role.
How Spider-Noir Could Introduce The Original Prowler
However, the upcoming Spider-Noir series might be unique for the Prowler character. Because the show is set in the dark and gritty world of Spider-Man Noir, and isn’t expected to feature the traditional Marvel Comics characters, it wouldn’t be a shock to see a different version of the Prowler appear.
The story of Hobie Brown, the original Spider-Man, could easily fit into the dark, gritty world of Spider-Noir. Given that Ben Reilly is portrayed as a private investigator in the show, it makes sense that many of his adversaries will be connected to organized crime, as seen with characters like Tombstone and Silvermane.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’ve been thinking about how they could bring Hobbie Brown, aka The Prowler, into Spider-Noir. I think it’d be really compelling to show him as a young man driven to stealing by his family’s money troubles. It could even tie into a storyline where Ben Reilly – Spider-Man – is investigating these thefts and tries to help Hobbie. Honestly, imagining Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Man mentoring a Prowler who’s maybe just a little lost or making bad choices? That’s a dynamic I’d definitely watch!
