Sinners & KPop Demon Hunters Face Off In Oscars Best Original Song Category

The highly anticipated competition between the films Sinners and KPop Demon Hunters has started, with both expected to be major contenders at the 2026 Oscars on March 15th. They’re predicted to compete in several important categories.

As reported by Variety, Sinners has entered its songs “I Lied to You” and “Last Time (I Seen the Sun)” into the Best Original Song category for the Oscars. This puts them in competition with “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters, which was submitted for consideration earlier in July.

Even though the Oscar nominations are still months away, experts predict all three songs will make the Academy’s initial list of 15 potential nominees for Best Original Song, likely to be revealed in mid-December. Then, the Academy’s music branch will choose the final five nominees from that group, with those selections announced on January 22, 2026.

The Academy Awards allow films to submit up to three original songs for consideration, but only two can be nominated, even if all three are initially shortlisted. The film Sinners intentionally submitted fewer than the maximum allowed, a choice with both advantages and disadvantages. For example, Barbie submitted three songs – “What Was I Made For?,” “I’m Just Ken,” and “Dance the Night.” All three were considered in the initial shortlist, but only two – “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken” – received nominations, while “Dance the Night” was left out.

Miles Caton performs “I Lied to You,” a song written by Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson. Alice Smith and Caton perform “Last Time (I Seen the Sun),” which they co-wrote with Göransson. Finally, EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI perform “Golden,” written by EJAE and Mark Sonnenblick.

Caton is a strong possibility for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Adding a songwriting credit for “Last Time (I Seen the Sun)” could put him in an exclusive club of Oscar nominees who’ve been recognized for both acting and original song, like Leslie Odom Jr. (for One Night in Miami and “Speak Now”), Mary J. Blige (Mudbound and “Mighty River”), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born and “Shallow”), and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet and “Stand Up”).

I’m really excited to see that Sinners is planning a full awards campaign! They’re aiming for all the big categories – Best Picture, Best Director for Ryan Coogler, even Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. Plus, they’ve submitted songs for consideration, which is adding to all the buzz the film has been getting since it premiered back in April. If everything goes according to plan, this could be a truly historic Oscar season for Sinners!

When it comes to the Best Original Song competition between Sinners and KPop Demon Hunters, the Netflix musical might be the frontrunner. Its song, “Golden,” has been incredibly popular since the movie came out on June 20th, hitting the top of many music charts.
