Shrinking co-creator Bill Lawrence sets the record straight on the plans for season 4.
Just before the season 3 finale of Shrinking aired, Jason Segel (Lawrence) shared on social media that they had finished filming the story they originally planned for three seasons. He expressed excitement about starting a completely new storyline next year, calling it both scary and fun. This caused some fans to wonder what season 4, which had already been renewed, would be like, and if the same actors would return. Segel quickly clarified that season 4 will feature the original cast, explaining that they’re making it because the actors enjoy working together.
Speaking with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan at the Scrubs premiere, creator Bill Lawrence explained that season 4 is moving forward because Apple TV gave the show another chance. He and the team realized there was more story to tell, moving beyond the original focus on Jimmy (Jason Segel) coping with the loss of his wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden). Lawrence’s full statement is available below.
There was a lot of excitement surrounding the show, and I sometimes feel silly online. But we reached a point where Apple offered us another season, and we had to decide how to proceed. We realized the third season had naturally concluded the story we’d been telling. We worried that if we stretched it into a fourth season and revisited the same emotional beats – like Jason Segel’s character still grieving his wife – the audience would feel we were repeating ourselves. So, we decided to wrap up that storyline. The fourth season won’t be a continuation; it’ll be a completely new story with the same actors playing different characters. It’s going to be fun to see everyone in new situations, and there might even be a time jump, though I’m not allowed to say for sure!
Though Lawrence hasn’t explicitly stated it, the show will likely move forward in time a few years, showing us what everyone is up to. He mentioned this when asked about Harrison Ford’s character, Paul, and his potential role in season 4 of Shrinking. Even though Paul has relocated to Connecticut, he’ll remain a key character, alongside Jimmy and the other main cast members we’ve followed since the beginning of the series.
With the show skipping ahead in time and Jason Segel’s comments about characters being in new situations, things will likely be very different for the cast of Shrinking when the show returns. We last saw Jimmy making progress and connecting with Sofi after a helpful conversation with Paul. While season four won’t focus on Jimmy’s grief anymore, it leaves us wondering what his next chapter will be and if Sofi will still be involved.
Jimmy’s storyline in the future will likely involve his daughter, Alice (Lukita Maxwell). At the end of season 3, she moves to Connecticut to attend Wesleyan University and play soccer. This puts her near Paul, which could mean the next season will be split between California and Connecticut, showing us how Alice is doing in college after a few years and how Paul is adjusting to retirement.
As the show moves forward in time, Brian and Charlie will be seasoned parents, having raised their child for several years, while Liz and Derek are enjoying grandparent status. Following Gaby and Derrick’s engagement at the end of season three, they’ll likely be married, and Gaby’s trauma center will probably be up and running. Sean will also have progressed in both his career and personal life.
With three successful seasons under its belt, Shrinking has set a high standard. However, Bill Lawrence has demonstrated with the Scrubs revival his ability to build on established characters and create a compelling new narrative. Season 4 of Shrinking isn’t a reboot or revival, but rather a fresh start as the characters move forward into the next phase of their lives.
All episodes of Shrinking seasons 1-3 are now streaming on Apple TV.
