Shifting Gears Season 3’s Fate Seemingly Revealed In New ABC Report

The fate of Shifting Gearsseason 3 has seemingly been revealed.

The new sitcom, created by Mike and Julie Thacker Scully and led by showrunner Michelle Nader, premiered in January 2025. It centers around Matt (Tim Allen), a car restoration shop owner and recent widower, whose life changes when his long-lost daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), and her kids move in with him – much to his initial reluctance.

Though season 2 of the Allen and Dennings comedy finished over two months ago and hasn’t been officially renewed, Deadline reports that season 3 of Shifting Gears is confirmed.

ABC has confirmed it plans to renew all of its current comedies and dramas for the 2026-2027 television season. This includes both the new detective series R.J. Decker and the reboot of Scrubs.

Show Status
Abbott Elementary Renewed (Season 6)
Grey’s Anatomy Renewed (Season 23)
High Potential Renewed (Season 3)
9-1-1 Renewed (Season 10)
9-1-1: Nashville Renewed (Season 2)
The Rookie Renewed (Season 9)
Shifting Gears Pending
Scrubs Pending
R.J. Decker Pending

However, there’s a possibility that some shows might get renewed with fewer episodes this season. This is because ABC is expected to order another season of The Rookie: North, a spin-off of the popular show The Rookie. It’s not confirmed yet, but this could affect episode numbers.

The ABC comedy Shifting Gears, starring Seann William Scott, Daryl Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis, has developed beyond its original focus on a father-daughter relationship. The show now highlights the talents of its entire cast and has also featured several well-known guest stars.

The show cleverly uses its setup to bring back beloved actors and create fun reunions, making it full of memorable cameo appearances. We’ve seen Jenna Elfman return as Matt’s girlfriend, Eve, and guest spots from stars like Jay Leno, Jesse Williams (from Grey’s Anatomy), Brenda Song, Gabriel Iglesias, and Luke Macfarlane (Platonic).

Tim Allen has happily reunited with his former co-stars from both Last Man Standing and Home Improvement, including Nancy Travis, Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning. The second season of Shifting Gears concluded with unresolved romantic storylines for Matt and Riley, setting the stage for more to come, as the show is likely to be renewed.

Shifting Gears is available to stream on Hulu.
