Action star Jason Statham is teaming up again with director Ric Roman Waugh, who previously worked with him on films like Angel Has Fallen and Greenland. Despite having other projects in development, including Mutiny and The Beekeeper 2, Waugh is eager to collaborate with Statham once more and already has a concept for their next high-octane thriller.
The new thriller Shelter, now playing in theaters, features Jason Statham in a role that showcases his action skills. He plays a former hitman pulled back into a violent world, alongside Bodhi Rae Breathnach (known from Hamnet), Bill Nighy (of Pirates of the Caribbean), Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice), and Daniel Mays (Rogue One). And, for Statham fans, it’s exactly the kind of film they expect and enjoy.
Ric Roman Waugh recently told FemaleFirst about working with Jason Statham on Shelter, praising Statham’s dedication and willingness to perform his own stunts. Waugh also mentioned a real-life story he hopes to film with Statham as the main character.
I really enjoy working with Jason; I’ve had a positive experience with him in the past. I’m also involved in another fascinating, current project based on a true story, but I can’t share details about it just yet.
‘Shelter’ Has Faltered Financially, but Statham & Waugh Together Again Is Still Exciting

Black Bear Pictures
It’s unclear what kind of movie Ric Roman Waugh and Jason Statham are planning next (we’ve asked for more information), but the possibility of them working together again is definitely thrilling. Waugh has proven he can deliver both exciting action and compelling drama, successfully blending genres in films like Shelter, Snitch, Kandahar, Shot Caller, the Greenland series, and Angel Has Fallen. Hopefully, despite Statham’s packed schedule, they’ll be able to collaborate on another project.
Critics had a mixed reaction to the action thriller, giving it a 63% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences loved it, awarding it an 87% rating on Popcornmeter. Despite the positive audience response, the film is currently underperforming at the U.S. box office and may not even earn back its $50 million production budget. Fortunately, the movie is proving popular internationally, especially in the Middle East and North Africa, where it’s been a box office hit.

While the January release likely impacted Shelter‘s box office numbers, it probably won’t significantly affect Jason Statham’s career – he remains a popular action star. He has several exciting projects on the way, including Mutiny, directed by Jean-François Richet (who directed Plane), scheduled for release on August 21, 2026. He’ll also reprise his role as Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, directed by Timo Tjahjanto, and will once again collaborate with Guy Ritchie for a sequel to Layer Cake, titled Viva La Madness.
