After 26 years since his role in Gladiator, Russell Crowe returns to the battlefield, donning armor to fight the Romans in a brand new, large-scale film.
Russell Crowe is known for many great films, but Gladiator truly established him as a leading actor. His moving performance as Maximus in 2000 captivated audiences and won him his only Academy Award for Best Actor. Now, after twenty years, Crowe is returning to a project he’s familiar with, The Last Druid, which has recently received positive news.
According to Deadline, production is starting on The Last Druid, and three new actors have been added to the cast. Russell Crowe will work again with Andreas Pietschmann, who previously appeared with him in Nuremberg, as well as in the series Dark and 1899. Rose Leslie, famous for playing Ygritte on Game of Thrones, and Daniel Zovatto are also joining the project, though details about their characters haven’t been revealed yet.
Filming for the movie is set to start on June 8th in Barcelona and the Canary Islands, both in Spain. William Eubank will direct, and he collaborated with Phil Gawthorne and Carlyle Eubank to write the screenplay.
Russell Crowe will play a serene Celtic leader forced to defend his family when the Roman emperor discovers their hidden community in the Scottish Highlands. Because the story shares similarities with the film Gladiator, there was a lot of international interest, and Amazon Studios secured the rights for a significant sum in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
The project was initially revealed in October 2024 with the announcement that Russell Crowe would star. According to reports, filming was originally planned for last year. At the time, Stuart Ford, an executive at AGC, expressed excitement about the film, noting that international distributors were very enthusiastic about Crowe’s involvement and praised the script’s blend of action and emotion.
The reason for the filming hold-up wasn’t shared, but Russell Crowe has been working on several projects recently, including The Weight, Bear Country, and Billion Dollar Spy. He’s currently shooting a new version of Highlander with Henry Cavill, who you might know from Man of Steel.
Russell Crowe will take on the role of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, a character previously played by Sean Connery. This new film will also reunite him with Djimon Hounsou, his co-star from Gladiator.
With filming beginning in under a month, we can expect to hear more news soon, such as who else will be starring and when the movie might come out. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for The Last Druid.
