8 Best Action Thriller Series On Netflix & Prime Video

Finding the right show on streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video can be surprisingly difficult. Recommendations and what’s popular often clutter the home screen, making it hard to discover series you’d genuinely enjoy. This is especially true for fans of action thrillers like Inception or John Wick, who have to sift through a lot of content to find something truly worth watching.

Both Netflix and Prime Video offer fantastic original action thriller series, with options ranging from their first shows to recent releases. If you’re looking for a thrilling, action-packed TV show with plenty of suspense, check out these eight recommendations – they’re sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Narcos (Netflix)

Netflix’s early success story, Narcos, still boasts a fantastic cast almost ten years after it ended. The show follows DEA agents Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal) as they investigate the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) and the powerful Colombian cartels.

As a true crime fan, I always found Narcos to be way more of a thrill ride than shows like Mindhunter or Dahmer. It’s dealing with the Medellín cartel, after all, and things get really intense! By season two, the fight against Escobar turns into some seriously heart-pounding moments, and his final days are just…wow. Even though the original Narcos wrapped up in 2017, they kept the energy going with Narcos: Mexico a year later, which gives you that same action-packed take on the drug war, but this time focusing on Mexico.

Jack Ryan (Prime Video)

Inspired by the popular book series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan debuted on Prime Video in 2018 and concluded in 2023 after four seasons. An R-rated film, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, will soon be available on the platform. John Krasinski plays Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who transitions from office work to fieldwork after discovering financial crimes linked to an Islamic terrorist. Throughout the series, he evolves into a seasoned operative and ultimately rises to become the CIA’s deputy director.

Despite being more focused on politics than typical action shows, John Krasinski shines as an action star in what’s become Prime Video’s most reliable series. What really makes Jack Ryan different is its commitment to realistically portraying international relations – with all the complexities that entails.

Reacher (Prime Video)

With both being crime thrillers featuring heroic characters named Jack and adapted from novels, it’s understandable why people might mix up Reacher and Jack Ryan. However, Reacher stands out because it portrays its main character, Jack Reacher (played by Alan Ritchson), as almost superhuman – exceptionally strong, smart, and courageous.

The series Reacher follows a wandering hero much like those in classic Westerns, with each season presenting a new mystery for him to solve as he travels across America. He’s tackled cases ranging from police corruption in a Georgia town to rescuing a secret informant, and in its fourth season, Reacher finds himself dealing with the fallout of a failed bombing plot.

The Night Agent (Netflix)

While Prime Video is known for its action-packed thrillers, Netflix has become a strong competitor, especially with shows like The Night Agent. Based on a book by Matthew Quirk, the series started in 2023 and just released its third season in early 2026, with the final episodes of season four coming soon.

Gabriel Basso plays Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent stuck with a pretty dull job – answering phones for a program called the Night Agent. That is, until he unexpectedly finds himself caught up in a major government conspiracy involving a spy and a former tech executive. The show could have easily fallen into predictable action-thriller tropes and become boring, but it surprisingly avoids that and has become one of Netflix’s most captivating recent series.

Black Doves (Netflix)

Even though only six episodes of the first season of Black Doves are currently available on Netflix, it’s a show that feels like it could run for many seasons. Starring Keira Knightley, Black Doves centers on a spy who secretly sells government secrets about her husband—the UK’s Secretary of Defense—to the black market. However, things get complicated when her lover is killed, exposing her compromised position and revealing a large-scale political conspiracy.

This spy thriller is perfect for a quick weekend watch, featuring Keira Knightley in what might be her strongest TV role to date. Ben Whishaw also gives a standout performance – high praise considering his beloved work as the voice of Paddington Bear! You should definitely check out this Netflix series now, before the new season comes out and everyone starts discussing it.

The Bondsman (Prime Video)

Unlike most action thrillers, The Bondsman immediately dives into horror. Kevin Bacon plays Hub Halloran, a bounty hunter who dies while working, only to return to life with a terrifying new job: hunting bounties for Satan. Think Ghost Rider meets No Country for Old Men – the show is a full season of proof that Kevin Bacon deserves his status as a top actor.

It’s disappointing that Prime Video canceled The Bondsman just a month after it launched, especially since it received positive reviews and attracted a lot of viewers initially. The show was delivering some of the most exciting action on television and had the potential to run for many seasons.

Steal (Prime Video)

Many action-thriller shows feature a standout villain, but Steal is different. It’s one of the few that makes you wonder who to root for – and who the real bad guys are. Sophie Turner plays Zara, a seemingly ordinary worker at an investment firm who gets caught up in an armed robbery… or does she? It turns out she was involved all along!

This series is possibly the best showcase of Sophie Turner’s talent since her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, and it’s consistently full of unexpected twists. What starts as a story about a woman dealing with trauma gradually unfolds to reveal her as a brilliant criminal, delivering suspenseful and action-packed crime scenes that keep you engaged. Hopefully, if Steal doesn’t get a second season, we’ll still get plenty of thrilling action from Turner in the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Prime Video.

Man On Fire (Netflix)

Netflix’s new series, Man on Fire, had a challenge: the original novel by A.J. Quinnell was already a popular movie starring Denzel Washington. But the series improves on the film by portraying the characters’ struggles with PTSD and alcoholism in a more thoughtful and sensitive way.

This action-packed series features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a former Special Forces captain haunted by the loss of his entire unit. Years later, he takes on a secret mission in Brazil that ignites a quest for revenge and uncovers shocking details about his time in the military. The series is truly captivating, largely due to Mateen’s powerful performance as a lone, rebellious hero – exactly the kind of thrilling content viewers are looking for in a new show.
