Be warned, this discusses plot points from the first episode of Rick and Morty season 9, “There’s Something About Morty”! Rick is still dealing with some personal issues in the latest season of Rick and Morty.
The new season of the popular Adult Swim show starts with Rick and Morty facing a threat from Evil Morty. He’s making Rick go on adventures, threatening to erase the entire Smith family from all realities if he doesn’t comply, using a powerful device called The Omega Device. Trailers for the season also hint at other storylines, including the ongoing tension between Jerry and Rick about household chores, a run-in with an ancient race, and a meeting with a martial arts master reminiscent of a Sifu.
Before the new season starts, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Ian Cardoni about Rick and Morty season 9. Cardoni, who plays Rick, shared that his character will be “trying to find moments of peace” despite the usual craziness, describing it as a result of the events in seasons 7 and 8. He hinted that the season will have “some pretty intense stuff” and present Rick with “some real crossroads.”
Ian Cardoni discusses how people deal with major life changes, suggesting that everyone, including the character Rick, is searching for identity and peace amidst chaos. Rick’s unique access to technology and other dimensions simply allows him to explore these questions in a more fantastical way. Cardoni hopes this exploration of the human experience – and all its different facets – will resonate with viewers, and that the resulting adventures will be entertaining.
Recent seasons of Rick and Morty have shown Rick exploring new paths in his life. In Season 7, he finally achieved a long-held goal by getting revenge on Rick Prime for his wife’s death, with a little help from Evil Morty. Then, in Season 8, he made the decision to let go of his memories of Diane by sending them into space, using a device similar to the one from the Season 5 episode, “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort.”
Evil Morty’s return in the season 9 premiere of Rick and Morty felt like a natural step in Rick’s ongoing journey to find some stability. By sending this dangerous version of his grandson to Time Prison – possibly for good – and giving him the Omega Device to protect his family across different universes, the episode removes a significant source of trouble for Rick.
Rick is well-known for constantly getting into trouble across the galaxy, and he’s made a lot of enemies along the way. Although he’s started to deal with some of his past issues recently, there’s still a wealth of his history the show can use to create compelling and intense storylines.
According to Cardoni, the next season of Rick and Morty will likely focus on what brings Rick happiness outside of traveling through different universes. We might see more of his personal life, like a distillery that Morty accidentally ruins, and episodes where Rick adventures without his grandson, giving viewers a deeper understanding of his complex character.
New episodes of Rick and Morty season 9 air Sundays at 11 p.m. EST on Adult Swim.
