Director Gore Verbinski, known for the animated comedy Rango, has discussed the possibility of a sequel. Though the original film, starring Johnny Depp, won an Academy Award for Best Animated Film 15 years ago, a follow-up hasn’t happened. Rango remains Verbinski’s only full-length animated feature so far, and also featured the voices of Isla Fisher, Timothy Olyphant, Abigail Breslin, and many other talented actors.
Gore Verbinski on how Rango 2 could happen
I recently read an interview with Gore Verbinski, and he mentioned something really interesting – apparently, they made Rango with a budget that was pretty standard for major animated films. It surprised me, honestly, because the movie looks so visually stunning! It just goes to show what they can do with creative filmmaking, even without an enormous budget.
Verbinski explained to Dexerto that he aimed for the scale of major animated films with his movie, which is why he hasn’t considered a sequel. He believes recreating the original’s success would be incredibly difficult, saying he isn’t even sure how to do it. The first film came together due to a unique and lucky combination of factors, making a repeat performance unlikely.
He expressed concern about the budget and jokingly said he needed someone with the financial resources to offer a solution, saying, “Someone needs to suggest that to me… someone with a checkbook!”
During a 2017 Reddit Q&A session to promote his film, A Cure for Wellness, director Gore Verbinski was asked about the possibility of a Rango sequel. He responded that he and the team had already given Rango their all during the first film.
Despite his success with Rango, Verbinski has said he wants to create a very different kind of animated movie. In 2021, he told Collider he was working on two animated films with Roger Deakins, the award-winning cinematographer from Rango. He mentioned neither film would be a Western like Rango, and one of them would be a musical. As of 2026, though, there haven’t been any significant announcements about these projects.
Okay, so as a movie fan, I always check how a film does, and Rango actually did really well! Box Office Mojo says it made about $246 million at the box office, which is great considering it cost around $135 million to make. Plus, critics seemed to like it – Rotten Tomatoes gives it an 88% ‘Fresh’ rating from critics, and audiences gave it a pretty solid 70% score, which is always good to see!
