Anthology series are ideal for binge-watching because each episode offers a fresh start with new stories, characters, and settings. Unlike a sitcom where you see the same things repeated over and over, an anthology like The Twilight Zone provides a completely different experience each time. Ten episodes mean ten unique heroes, villains, premises, and surprising conclusions – perfect for a cozy day indoors.
Netflix has become the leading platform for excellent anthology series. They famously rescued Black Mirror from Channel 4, transforming it into a worldwide hit. More recently, they gave Guillermo del Toro free rein to create his horror anthology, Cabinet of Curiosities, inspired by the classic Night Gallery.
Love, Death & Robots is a standout anthology series of the last ten years. It’s known for taking risks and pushing boundaries more than any other show of its kind. The episodes vary wildly – you’ll find comedies, tragedies, and horror, all with different looks and feels. From highly stylized animation to incredibly realistic visuals, each episode is unique, experimenting with new styles and genres.
Lots of excellent anthology series exist, and some truly stand out despite not getting the attention they deserve. The Duplass brothers’ Room 104 was a creative and unique show that played with different genres, Slasher offers a fresh spin on classic horror, and The Outer Limits is often overshadowed but deserves recognition alongside The Twilight Zone. In 2017, Amazon Prime Video launched a spooky anthology called Lore, which was renewed for a second season but then unfortunately cancelled.
Lore Is A Chilling Blend Of Horror & Documentary
Lore began as a podcast exploring dark and mysterious tales – folklore, ghost stories, urban legends, and supernatural happenings. When it was turned into a TV series on Amazon, they smartly brought in the podcast’s creator, Aaron Mahnke, to ensure the show stayed true to its original feel. Had a different showrunner taken the helm, Lore likely would have been just another typical horror anthology loosely based on legends. But with Mahnke at the forefront, the series is truly unique.
The podcast Lore presents a new story in each episode, typically exploring the true origins of well-known folk tales. It delves into the real-life inspirations behind stories like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and examines historical accounts of people who genuinely believed in creatures like werewolves. Each episode blends documentary-style footage with dramatic reenactments, creating a unique horror experience. This approach feels fresh and different, and by grounding these monster stories in real-world history, Lore makes them even more frightening – it makes the line between fiction and reality, and therefore our sense of safety, much thinner.
Anthology series benefit from being able to attract well-known actors for single episodes, rather than requiring a commitment to a full series. This approach allowed shows like Black Mirror to feature stars like Jon Hamm and Bryce Dallas Howard, and Cabinet of Curiosities to cast Tim Blake Nelson, F. Murray Abraham, and Andrew Lincoln. Lore also utilizes this advantage, boasting a cast that includes recognizable faces such as Robert Patrick (from Terminator 2), Adam Goldberg (known from Friends and Dazed and Confused), Jürgen Prochnow (Das Boot, David Lynch’s Dune), and Steven Berkoff (Octopussy).
