Pokémon Winds & Waves is looking like it could be one of the most ambitious games in the Pokémon series so far! It will introduce Generation 10 with a completely new tropical region, and it’s being built specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. Although Game Freak hasn’t shared many official details yet, fans are getting increasingly excited based on leaks, theories, and close analysis of the trailer shown in February during Pokémon Presents.
The game takes players to a beautiful island region based on Southeast Asia, complete with thick jungles, wide beaches, volcanoes, and underwater areas. Players can choose from three starter Pokémon: Browt (Grass-type), Pombon (Fire-type), or Gecqua (Water-type). Recent reports suggest the new version will also include updated battle systems, better ways to play with others online, potentially brand new Pokémon types, and a huge selection of over 300 Pokémon to collect.
Although Pokémon Winds & Waves isn’t expected until 2027, fans are excited for more news. A recently leaked image of the game’s map—shared on Reddit—reveals exactly how many Gyms will be available when it launches.
A recent leak from Centro Leaks indicates that the new Pokémon game, Winds & Waves, will have a large map filled with many islands. However, only about eight of these islands will contain Gyms. This suggests the game will also feature eight Gym Leaders, maintaining the traditional structure of the Pokémon series even within its brand-new tropical setting.
Although Game Freak hasn’t officially confirmed it, the rumored number of gyms would fit the pattern of almost every core Pokémon game since the very first, Pokémon Red & Blue. With a few exceptions – like Sun & Moon, which used Island Trials instead of Gyms, and Legends: Arceus, which didn’t have Gyms at all – eight Gyms has been the standard way to progress through a Pokémon adventure for almost thirty years.
According to the leak, the eight gyms will be broken down as follows:
- Gym 1: Grass
- Gym 2: Poison
- Gym 3: Flying
- Gym 4: Fighting
- Gym 5: Dark
- Gym 6: Normal
- Gym 7: Steel
- Gym 8: Fairy
It wasn’t shocking to hear the reported number of new Pokémon, as fans had largely predicted it. The bigger question now is how these Pokémon will be presented – specifically, will players be able to encounter them in any order, similar to how it worked in Scarlet & Violet?
Since this information comes from an unconfirmed leak, the gym types and locations aren’t official yet, so it’s best to view it with a bit of skepticism.
