The first-ever NCIS major recast is finally unveiled.
Following a busy couple of seasons on television, CBS is planning some changes for its popular NCIS franchise when it returns this fall. In addition to bringing back Mark Harmon as Gibbs in season 3 of NCIS: Origins and Michael Weatherly as Tony Dinozzo Jr. in the original NCIS, the network is developing a new spin-off series – something they haven’t done since NCIS: Origins first aired in 2024. This time, they’re using the same method they previously used to launch new NCIS shows.
CBS isn’t reinventing its popular NCIS series; it’s expanding the world with a new location. Following the success of NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans, the show is setting up shop in New York City, led by LL Cool J reprising his role as Sam Hanna. Joining him are Jennifer Beals, Jacqueline Byers, Shane Harper, and Devin Druid. A key addition to the cast of NCIS: New York is Scott Caan, whose character’s name hasn’t been revealed yet – a detail fans are particularly excited about given his previous work on Hawaii Five-0.
José Pérez shared a picture and video on Instagram showing Caan back with the NCIS universe, but this time as a new character! The post also includes Byers as Addison Ross and Harper as Wyatt Hill. You can see Sam and his latest partner in the video too – check it out below.
All three of the NCIS shows recently held their first table reads for the new season. CBS has made a few changes to its fall 2026 schedule, particularly on Tuesdays. NCIS: New York will now air at 9pm Eastern, and the final season of NCIS: Origins will move to 10pm Eastern. The original NCIS will continue to air at 8pm Eastern. Unfortunately, fans of NCIS: Sydney will need to wait until 2027 to see what happens next with JD and Mackey.
Beyond James Caan’s return, another detail from the new photos and video is that he isn’t wearing an NCIS vest. This likely means Sam and his team are meeting the actor playing his character for the first time in New York City. It’s a smart move for NCIS: New York to build the show’s story around this encounter, as their partnership seems central to the spin-off.
It’s currently unknown if the show will continue filming in New York City. Interestingly, the original NCIS series films in California, even though the show’s office is supposedly located in Washington D.C. Despite the higher costs, CBS allowing the new NCIS series to film on location in New York is a positive move. These outdoor shots will help establish a unique look and feel for the show, differentiating it from other NCIS spin-offs.
