Be warned: the following contains spoilers for the movie Playdate! If you want to watch this exciting film, it’s available with an Amazon Prime membership.
A new action movie called Playdate just came out, and it has a seriously shocking ending – possibly the most surprising I’ve seen all year. I was hoping Playdate, starring Kevin James and Alan Ritchson, would be a funny action comedy that would also let Alan Ritchson, known from Reacher, show off his comedic side. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen.
Although Alan Ritchson was actually quite funny, the story itself felt chaotic and didn’t really work. The day Kevin James’ character and his stepson spent with Ritchson and his son ended so unexpectedly and strangely that I was completely confused.
Clones? Why’d It Have To Be Clones?
At the end of the movie Playdate, despite negative reviews, it’s revealed that Jeff, played by Alan Ritchson, was the ideal soldier envisioned by Colonel Kurtz (Hiro Kanagawa). But Jeff’s empathy proved to be a problem, so the villains used technology to engineer a truly perfect soldier – one devoid of emotion and designed solely for killing.
It turns out they created CJ, the child Jeff was caring for, and several other clones using Jeff’s DNA. That’s quite a surprising revelation!
Things took a dark turn when Kurtz commanded CJ to kill Jeff—an unthinkable request for a child to make against a father figure. Luckily, Ritchson’s character managed to reason with his clone. CJ then hilariously shot Alan Tudyk’s villainous character, Maddox, in the rear with a crossbow. Together with Kevin James’ Brian and Brian’s stepson, Lucas, they battled their way out of the warehouse.
Honestly, the idea that cloning explained CJ and Jeff’s relationship never even crossed my mind while watching this movie. It was the last thing I expected.
The movie taking a turn towards child soldiers, genetically enhanced super soldiers, and clones was really unexpected and honestly, pretty shocking.
Why Are We Saving One Of The Clones But Letting The Rest Of Them Explode?
I understand the other clones in this streaming movie were, as Kevin James’ character described, dangerous killers. After escaping the dangerous situation, they destroyed them all by blowing up the building.
It makes me wonder: if there’s a way to save CJ, why isn’t it possible to save the other clones too?
The movie really seems to be saying that even though CJ was created with the potential for evil, he was raised with kindness and deserved a chance at a good life. If that’s true for him, then maybe all the other child soldiers created through cloning could have been saved as well.
The movie features a surprising amount of intense violence involving children, even though they’re presented as evil clones. Ultimately, the ending feels strange and undermines the emotional impact of rescuing the child who had a long-standing connection with Jeff. It leaves you with an odd feeling.

As a total movie buff, I’m always checking out streaming options, and Amazon Prime Video is a great one. They’re offering a 30-day free trial right now, which is awesome because it gives you access to a huge collection of films and TV shows. Plus, you get perks like fast, free shipping, and access to Prime Gaming and Prime Reading. After the trial, it’s $14.99 a month if you decide to stick with it. I’m definitely considering taking advantage of this deal!
Why On Earth Did They Set Up A Sequel?
But the movie doesn’t stop at the end credits! There’s an extra scene shown after the credits that hints at a future story.
After a few funny mishaps and a dance performance with the four main actors wearing red tracksuits, Brian’s wife, Emily (played by Sarah Chalke), arrives with Tostitos and salsa, asking about the playdate. But before Kevin James’ character can begin explaining, CJ and Jeff show up at the door with sleeping bags.
After teasing Brian about the reason for their visit, Jeff reveals that his house was destroyed by a new group of villains, which kicks off their next adventure.
I don’t want things to escalate any further. I’m actually okay with how things turned out – there was plenty of drama, and now I’d just like everyone to return to their normal routines, including myself.
