Pierce Brosnan Hints That Doctor Fate Could Return in ‘Superman’ Sequel

Pierce Brosnan has suggested he might reprise his role as Doctor Fate in future DC films, but it’s unclear if this is accurate. He first played the character in 2022’s Black Adam, alongside Dwayne Johnson. However, due to the mixed reception to Black Adam, James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to lead DC Studios and essentially start over with a new DC Universe.

In an interview with GQ, Pierce Brosnan suggested he might return as Doctor Fate, mentioning rumors of a dedicated Doctor Fate show or movie and a potential appearance in the next Superman film. He expressed his enjoyment of the character and willingness to reprise the role, stating he found the character’s philosophy compelling. However, DC Studios co-president James Gunn dismissed these rumors on Threads, saying he hadn’t heard anything about a Doctor Fate project.

James Gunn might be minimizing the news about Doctor Fate’s appearance in Man of Tomorrow, as he didn’t explicitly deny it. Alternatively, Pierce Brosnan could simply be mistaken – he might have been thinking of a previous Superman film starring Henry Cavill, before the DC Universe was restarted. Originally, Black Adam was meant to kick off a series of connected projects, including a showdown between Superman and Black Adam, a spin-off focused on the Justice Society, and a movie about the Wonder Twins.

Brosnan may be hinting at the appearance of Sister Symmetry in the movie Superman. This character, who resembles Doctor Fate, is seen on the Hall of Justice mural. Sister Symmetry is actually Madame Xanadu, wearing a magical cloak called the Cloak of Cyra. This cloak was created by a powerful female magic user, similar to the one who created Doctor Fate’s helmet.

Doctor Fate could fit well into the DC Universe James Gunn is building. He was part of the Justice League International team Gunn is drawing inspiration from, alongside characters like Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern and Booster Gold. Doctor Fate is also connected to the Justice Society, which includes heroes like Mister Terrific and Hawkgirl. However, the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie is already becoming quite crowded. It will feature Brainiac, and there are suggestions Wonder Woman might also appear. Considering those characters, plus the returning cast from Superman, it’s unclear if there will be space for Doctor Fate in that film.
