Sony is releasing the entire eight-season Outlander series on DVD September 22nd. This collection includes 37 discs and costs $250.99. It’s currently available for pre-order on Amazon.
Season 8, a 4-disc set, is currently 29% off on Amazon. The Blu-ray version costs $47.99, while the DVD is $39.99. Both formats will be available starting September 22nd.
The final season of the show will have a special Collector’s Edition available on Blu-Ray for $70.49. This edition includes seven deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and a nearly ten-hour featurette called “Outlander for All Time.” It will be released in Europe starting September 24th.
Outlander Season 8 Was a Divisive Send-Off
The Starz series Outlander, which began in 2014, quickly became a critically acclaimed show. Based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, it tells the captivating love story of Claire Randall, a nurse from World War II, and Jamie Fraser, a Scottish Highlander – a couple whose romance transcends time.
Though often seen as a romance due to the strong connection between its main characters, this show was actually a gritty, violent historical drama. It depicted both the Jacobite Rising and the American Revolution.
Okay, so Season 8 was really controversial. It’s weird because professional critics absolutely loved it – gave it a perfect score! But regular viewers like me? Not so much. We only gave it a 54% approval rating, which shows you how split the reaction was.
The latest season followed several characters and introduced Jamie and Claire’s niece, Fanny. It also struggled to find a purpose for Jamie’s son, William. The storyline centered around the Revolutionary War, hinting at Jamie’s eventual death. Despite their efforts to prevent it, the season ended with Jamie being shot.
What Happened to Jamie and Claire?
In the last scene, Claire remains closely embraced with Jamie throughout the night. There’s a quick flash of blue light emanating from Claire, and just before they both simultaneously open their eyes, her hair turns completely white.
Though showrunner Matthew B. Roberts wouldn’t confirm fan theories, he suggested there might be a connection between Claire and La Dame Blanche (the White Witch). The series subtly hinted at this – whenever Claire used significant amounts of power in the past, a strand of her hair would turn white, implying she exhausted all her energy to save Jamie.
Roberts shared his personal take on how the story ends, but believes everyone should form their own opinion. He emphasized he won’t dictate how fans understand the final moment.
The showrunner explained that stories should evoke emotions in viewers, rather than dictate them. They believe it’s not their place to tell the audience how to feel, but instead create experiences that allow feelings to arise naturally.
