Law & Order: SVU Season 28: Release Date, Story, & Everything We Know

Mariska Hargitay will be back for season 28 of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Season 27 was a challenging time for the show, with changes happening both on and off screen. Olivia Benson often had to work without her usual partner, as Ice-T appeared in fewer episodes. Then, a new detective joined the team, and it quickly became clear they had a hidden past and weren’t entirely trustworthy.

Perhaps the most compelling development in Law & Order: SVU season 27 was the introduction of a real adversary for Benson. Noma Dumezweni joined the cast as Chief Tynan, who has been working against Benson all season to hide secrets from her own past. This ongoing conflict has been a welcome addition, revitalizing a show that’s been on the air for almost three decades.

The show’s recent improvements are partly thanks to Michele Fazekas, a long-time writer and producer for SVU, becoming showrunner in season 27. She previously wrote some of the show’s most memorable episodes, and she’s made history as the first woman to lead Law & Order: SVU as showrunner.

It’s still unclear how Olivia Benson’s recent encounter with a challenging opponent will affect the show, but upcoming episodes will mark a significant achievement for the series on network television. NBC is also making changes to the Law & Order franchise beyond the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Law & Order: SVU Season 28 Has Already Been Confirmed By NBC

I was so relieved when NBC renewed Law & Order: SVU! It wasn’t the first show they picked up for another season, but thankfully I didn’t have to wait until the very end of season 27 to find out its fate. They announced the renewal for season 28 back in April, which is amazing! Considering it’s already the longest-running primetime drama on broadcast TV, this means SVU is well on its way to hitting 600 episodes – and I can’t wait to see it happen!

Although the full cast for season 28 of SVU isn’t official yet, Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T are almost certainly returning. Kelli Giddish and Peter Scanavino, who have been with the show for a long time, are also expected to continue as cast members.

Fazekas will continue as showrunner for NBC’s 2026-2027 season, according to Deadline. Her first season leading the show has also been its most successful yet on Peacock. Now, SVU is NBC’s most-watched series when new episodes become available for streaming on Fridays.

When Will Law & Order: SVU Season 28 Release?

NBC has confirmed that Law & Order: SVU will return this fall. The new drama Line of Fire, starring Peter Krause, is set to premiere in September. Considering this, SVU will likely also be back in September.

As a big fan of the One Chicago universe, I’m keeping an eye on how many episodes we’ll get for the next season. We know SVU and the other shows – Fire, P.D., and Med – are all connected, and NBC usually gives those dramas around 21 episodes each. Since they tend to keep the episode counts pretty consistent across the whole franchise, I’m betting season 28 will also have 21 episodes. Fingers crossed!

As a big fan of the Law & Order franchise, I was surprised to hear about the schedule changes on NBC. SVU is thankfully still on Thursdays at 9 p.m., but it won’t be following the original Law & Order anymore. Apparently, NBC is shaking things up and putting The Traitors on first, then SVU, with Law & Order wrapping up the night. It was a bit of a wait to find out if Law & Order would even come back, but now it’ll be last in the lineup!

What Law & Order: SVU Season 28’s Story Could Be About

Season 28 of Law & Order: SVU will continue to feature strong, individual cases each week, but the bigger storylines are still being developed. What actually happens will depend on which characters return in the fall. The show has been without Stabler for a long time, so a guest appearance by Christopher Meloni would be great, even though Law & Order: Organized Crime has finished. It will also be interesting to see how the show explains any reduction in Ice-T’s number of episodes this season.

Chief Tynan has been a compelling recurring villain for Benson, adding depth to the typically case-of-the-week format of SVU. If the show wraps up that storyline in the season 27 finale, Noma Dumezweni’s successful portrayal of a Benson adversary could pave the way for more long-term, connected stories in the future.

Most likely, Benson will overcome the legal issues she’s facing after being held in contempt of court. The show Law & Order: SVU simply wouldn’t be the same without Mariska Hargitay leading her team at the NYPD.
