I was completely blown away by KPop Demon Hunters – it absolutely exploded on Netflix and became their biggest hit! And honestly, the fanbase is still growing like crazy. I’m so excited to hear they’re already planning a sequel for 2029! It seems like they’re really building out the world of HUNTR/X too, which is awesome. The Fortnite skins were a fun surprise, and those sing-along screenings? Genius! Everything so far has been a hit.
It seems like popular franchises are always looking for ways to grow beyond their original format, and Netflix’s attempts to adapt anime into live-action haven’t always succeeded. If a spinoff were made from KPop Demon Hunters, it should build on the world established in the movie. While the three main characters could easily lead a spinoff, there’s a surprising character who deserves a bigger role.
KPop Demon Hunters’ Derpy Is A Fan-Favorite Character
The blue tiger in KPop Demon Hunters, who mostly communicates through purrs and occasional notes, quickly became a fan favorite, even with his awkward first appearance. He and his six-eyed magpie companion often visit Rumi, acting as messengers for the demon, Jinu. Although their names aren’t mentioned in the film, the creator, Maggie Kang, has revealed the tiger is named Derpy and the magpie is Sussie.
Although Derpy doesn’t have a big part in KPop Demon Hunters, his unique look is one of the most memorable things about the movie, even though he’s only on screen briefly. Both Derpy and Sussie are intriguing characters, and a spin-off featuring them could create some interesting new directions for the KPop Demon Hunters series.
A Derpy Spinoff Could Show Us More Of The Demon World
In a recent interview with Forbes, Kang clarified that Derpy isn’t a Demon or a Hunter, leaving its true identity a mystery. He admitted he’s pondered what Derpy could be, especially considering its ability to travel to the Demon world, which might offer a clue.
I’m really excited about where KPop Demon Hunters could go, and it feels like they’re already hinting at a continuation. But honestly, I think it’s designed to be a complete story, not something that will drag on forever. I’m even more intrigued by the idea of a ‘Derpy’ spinoff. Instead of a full movie or series, I’d love to see something like those Pixar shorts – little glimpses into the demon world, but told from Derpy’s hilarious perspective. That feels like a perfect fit and would be so much fun!
Has A Derpy Spinoff Been Confirmed?
In a recent Forbes interview, Kang discussed the future of the KPop Demon Hunters universe. She mentioned that many scenes were removed from the initial release, scenes that would have explained some mysteries, including the origins of characters like Derpy the tiger and Sussie the six-eyed bird. With a sequel in the works and plans for additional spin-offs, it’s likely we’ll see Derpy again.
The next installment of KPop Demon Hunters needs to address some lingering questions, and exploring the backstory of the character Derpy would be a welcome addition. While a series focused solely on Derpy hasn’t been announced, his popularity with fans and in merchandise suggests a spinoff could happen in the future.
