It’s common now for hit TV shows to get spinoffs, but that wasn’t always the case. Decades ago, there were fewer channels and less airtime, so spinoffs were rarer. One example that might explain why some shows shouldn’t get them is the Friends spinoff, which was canceled mid-way through its second season. Originally, eight episodes weren’t shown on NBC due to declining viewership. Now, all episodes from both seasons – including those unaired ones – are available to watch for free.
I can’t believe it’s been almost 20 years since Joey was canceled! While Friends has been easy to watch online for years, finding Joey has always been tough, especially here in the U.S. It’s been impossible to even find the last few episodes that never originally aired here on any streaming service. The show premiered back in September 2004, and it was so exciting to see Joey Tribbiani move to Los Angeles to chase his acting dreams. Matt LeBlanc was fantastic, and the supporting cast – Drea de Matteo as his sister Gina, Paolo Costanzo, Andrea Anders, and Jennifer Coolidge – were all amazing. They even had some really big guest stars like Lucy Liu, Carmen Electra, and Christina Ricci!
The show started strong, but by the middle of its second season, ratings began to fall. Moving the show from Thursdays to Tuesdays put it up against the popular show American Idol, and as a result, it was canceled with eight episodes still unaired. International viewers were able to finish watching the season, but U.S. audiences were left without a conclusion. Adding to the disappointment, the series was never released on DVD in the United States, only internationally.
The official Friends YouTube channel has uploaded the last episodes of Joey, completing the full series available on the platform. This allows fans in the United States to watch the show’s conclusion nearly twenty years after it ended and was removed from television.
Was ‘Joey’ Really That Bad?

NBC
I always felt like Joey had a tough act to follow, being a spin-off of the huge hit Friends. It definitely wasn’t as beloved by critics – they were pretty split on it, giving it a 50% rating. But, you know, it still had a lot of fans! People seemed to really enjoy it, as evidenced by its 73% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. I was one of them, honestly.
The biggest issue with the show Joey was that Matt LeBlanc’s character wasn’t strong enough to carry a series on his own. Critics generally reacted negatively, with many feeling the show had potential but ultimately fell short. Some described Joey Tribbiani as predictable, and one review in the Globe and Mail was especially harsh, calling the show uninspired and lacking substance.
Fans can now rewatch the series for free. Although it’s different from Friends, these previously unseen episodes only take about four hours to watch, meaning those who’ve been waiting years can finally see how the story concludes.
