In 1989, Trisha Meili was attacked while running in Central Park. Five teenagers were arrested and accused of the assault, but the case quickly became complicated and controversial. The story is now the focus of a gripping four-part documentary series on Netflix. Netflix is known for its popular true-crime content, and this particular miniseries stands out as exceptionally well-made and compelling from beginning to end.
When They See Us starts by introducing the teenagers who would later be known as the Central Park Five. The series then follows the harrowing events – the attack, the trial, and its aftermath. What makes When They See Us so compelling is its powerful and detailed portrayal of the case, focusing on previously unheard perspectives and avoiding the sensationalism often found in true crime stories.
When They See Us is ideal for watching all in one sitting. The four episodes total about five hours, and each one covers a different part of the story – from the initial arrests to what happened afterward. It’s easy to follow along. Instead of using suspenseful cliffhangers, the series pulls you in with its powerful emotions, making you want to see justice served for the wrongly accused.
This series is tough to watch, but it’s a must-see for anyone fascinated by true crime and how the justice system works. Director Ava DuVernay received high praise for her work, particularly for exposing injustices within the legal system. As one review noted, the series rightly condemns the guilty and powerfully conveys the outrage these events deserve. At its heart, the show tells the true story of the Central Park Five with sensitivity and respect, and all five men were honored guests at the 2019 Emmy Awards, attending with DuVernay.
When They See Us Contains Some Of The Best Performances In Any Netflix Miniseries
A key reason When They See Us is such a powerful true crime drama is the incredible acting. The show received six Emmy nominations, and Jharrel Jerome won for Outstanding Lead Actor for his performance as Korey Wise. Jerome brilliantly portrays Wise’s transformation over time, showing him evolve from a scared young boy into a man deeply affected by his time in prison, particularly the experience of solitary confinement.
The five actors skillfully portray the teenagers as individuals, rather than a unified group, emphasizing how each of them reacts differently to the accusations and the trial. A particularly impactful scene in the first episode shows them beginning to blame each other in an attempt to protect themselves – a moment that both hints at what’s to come and underscores their distinct personalities.
| The Central Park Five and Their Actors | |
|---|---|
| Real Person | Played By |
| Antron McCray | Caleel Harris |
| Kevin Richardson | Asante Blackk |
| Yusef Salaam | Ethan Herisse |
| Raymond Santana | Marquis Rodriguez |
| Korey Wise | Jharrel Jerome |
Casting actors to play the same character at different ages can be tricky, but the miniseries When They See Us handled it exceptionally well. The transitions between actors felt smooth and natural, with one exception: the actor who played the older Jerome also played the younger version. The show benefited from the fact that many of the actors met the real people they were portraying, adding a level of realism that’s crucial for true crime stories, which can sometimes exaggerate events for dramatic effect.
Beyond the incredible performances from the actors portraying the young men known as The Exonerated Five, Marsha Stephanie Blake and John Leguizamo really stood out as the parents. Blake’s portrayal of Linda McCray, fighting against a seemingly impossible system, was particularly powerful, and Leguizamo perfectly captured the desperation of a father trying to protect his son. As you’d expect with a show based on a true story, some details were trimmed for time, but When They See Us absolutely nails the emotional core of the case. And with a whopping 96% positive rating from critics, I can confidently say every episode is a masterpiece.
