Netflix has released a captivating mystery thriller that successfully combines elements of The 100 and From. This show expertly blends intense survival scenarios with science fiction, making it ideal for a long binge-watch. It immediately draws viewers in and explores thought-provoking themes of leadership, the mysteries of the unknown, and the struggles of adapting to a completely unfamiliar life.
Netflix’s The Society follows a group of teens left to fend for themselves in their empty hometown. The show shares similarities with The 100 and From, particularly in its focus on survival, establishing leadership, and navigating conflicts. While The Society begins with teenagers returning to a deserted town, The 100 starts with juveniles sent back to an uninhabitable planet to determine if it can support life. Despite these different beginnings, both shows explore similar themes of how young people cope and build a society when left to their own devices.
I was completely hooked by The Society – it reminded me so much of From. The characters find themselves in this incredibly strange place, and just trying to survive is a huge struggle because nothing feels right. It’s that unsettling mystery, combined with the creepy atmosphere, that makes it so binge-worthy. Every episode throws new questions at you, but it never gives away too much, so you have to keep watching to figure out what’s really happening.
Why The Society Doesn’t Have A Season 2
Despite positive reviews – an 86% score from critics and 81% from audiences – the Netflix series The Society wasn’t renewed for a second season. Although Netflix initially ordered another season, it was later canceled. Deadline reports that the streaming service couldn’t afford the costs of filming with a large cast under the safety guidelines required due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Netflix has a habit of rescuing shows other networks cancel, but they surprisingly didn’t do that for one of their own popular sci-fi series, leaving fans understandably upset. The show, The Society, was so well-liked that fans created a petition on Change.org with over 149,000 signatures hoping for a renewal. The cancellation is particularly disappointing because the story was just starting to explore its biggest mysteries – like what happened to the adults and whether the teenagers were stuck in another world.
It’s clear a lot of fans are hoping Netflix brings back The Society to finish its five-season story. Unfortunately, Netflix hasn’t indicated any plans to revive the show. Now that Stranger Things has ended, though, Netflix needs a new sci-fi hit, and The Society would be a great choice to fill that gap.
The Society’s Cast Is Full Of Stars
I was seriously impressed by the cast of The Society – they really put together a group of amazing young actors! You had some familiar faces like Sean Berdy, Kathryn Newton, Kristine Froseth, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, and Gideon Adlon, but also a lot of up-and-comers who have become huge since then. Speaking of Kathryn Newton, she was fantastic as Allie Pressman, and it’s been awesome watching her career take off! She’s been in Big Little Lies, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Lisa Frankenstein, Abigail, and Ready or Not 2 – and she’s even heading back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Avengers: Doomsday! It’s cool to see actors from The Society doing so well.
| The Society Cast and Characters | |
|---|---|
| Actor | Character |
| Kathryn Newton | Allie Pressman |
| Kristine Froseth | Kelly Aldrich |
| Toby Wallace | Elliot Campell |
| Natasha Liu Bordizzo | Helena |
| Sean Berdy | Sam Elliot |
| Gideon Adlon | Becca Gelb |
Toby Wallace, known for playing a troubled teen in the show Euphoria, also appears as Wayne. Kristine Froseth, previously on The Society, has been in the teen drama Looking for Alaska and most recently starred in Apple TV’s period drama, The Buccaneers.
The Society Is A Modern Lord Of The Flies
Many people compare the TV show The Society to Lord of the Flies because they both explore what happens when kids are left to govern themselves. While the specific situations are different – one involves a mysteriously vanished town, the other a deserted island – the shows ultimately demonstrate similar outcomes when children are forced to survive and create their own rules.
Both the Netflix series The Society and the novel Lord of the Flies share a common theme: the breakdown of order. In The Society, a group of teenagers returns home to find all the adults have disappeared. Similarly, Lord of the Flies features schoolboys stranded on an island. In both stories, the characters initially attempt to establish rules and maintain control, but things quickly fall apart as they begin to fight for power.
