The Netflix movie KPop Demon Hunters is a huge hit, but it turned out very differently from the filmmakers’ original vision. They initially planned a much darker, more violent, and mature film, but it became popular thanks to its catchy music and lighthearted humor.
About six months after starting the project, Sony realized that Kpop Demon Hunters could become a franchise. They then asked writer/director Maggie Kang to work with other creatives, including Chinese-American filmmaker Chris Applehans, to make the movie more suitable for children and families. This collaboration led to a significant change in the film’s direction.
Kang explained that because Chris’s wife is Korean, he understood Chris had a good understanding of Korean culture. Kang especially admired Chris’s dedication to his film Wish Dragon, which is set in China. Chris knew it was important to immerse himself in the culture, so he lived and worked in China with a Chinese crew for two years. Kang greatly respected this commitment to authenticity.
