Netflix launched a popular new show in late April, and it’s still gaining viewers nearly a month later.
Okay, so Man on Fire isn’t dominating the charts anymore, but honestly, it’s still hanging in there! I was surprised to see it’s currently ninth worldwide, and even better, it just jumped back up to number six here in the U.S. according to FlixPatrol. It’s a really gripping action thriller, so I’m glad people are still discovering it.
The video quickly gained traction, racking up 11 million views and 61 hours of watch time in its first week. It became even more popular the following week, reaching 12.6 million views and a total of 70.2 million hours viewed. While it slipped to fifth place in its third week, it still added another 5.5 million views and 30.3 million hours of watch time.
What Happens in Man on Fire?
Like the stories of Reacher and Jack Ryan, Man on Fire started as a popular book series written by A.J. Quinnell. The first book came out in 1980 and was followed by several more. It was also made into a movie in 2005, starring Denzel Washington.
As a huge fan of the source material, I’m really excited about this new adaptation. It doesn’t just draw from A.J. Quinnell’s original novel, but also cleverly weaves in elements from its sequel, The Perfect Kill. The story centers around John Creasy, a former Special Forces operative who was legendary for his skills and ability to overcome anything. But this isn’t the same Creasy we remember. He’s deeply scarred by PTSD and haunted by his past. He’s trying to rebuild his life, but of course, trouble finds him, and he’s thrown back into a dangerous world where he’ll have to fight like never before.
The series stars Abdul Mateen II, along with Billie Boullet from World-Breaker as Poe Rayburn and Alice Braga (known for City of God) as Valeria Melo. Scoot McNairy (True Detective) and Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher, Scarpetta) will appear as guest stars, playing Henry Tappen and Paul Rayburn.
Critics generally gave Man on Fire a lukewarm reception, with 61% giving it a positive review based on 36 critics. Audiences liked it a bit more, with 65% giving it a positive rating.
Will Man on Fire Get Season 2?
The show has attracted a good number of viewers, though opinions from critics have been varied. With many novels featuring the Creasy character still available from author A. J. Quinnell, there’s potential for future storylines. However, Netflix hasn’t confirmed whether a second season will happen yet.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is also in high demand, as he will appear in several films, including the Mark Walhberg-led historical crime thriller By Any Means, the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood sequel , and Louis Leterrier’s sci-fi action thriller Liminal, as well as .
However, the actor has already shared an interest in . “Could be him for a long time,” the actor confirmed when asked about a potential return.
I’ve definitely given it some thought. It’s important to have a strong reason for taking on a role, and you need to genuinely enjoy it, at least. I always aim to truly love my work, but liking it is the minimum. This character, John Creasy, is fantastic, and this project has been a wonderful experience. It’s exciting to think about what might happen next.
Regarding a potential renewal of the show, Abdul-Mateen II said he prefers not to dwell on it. He expressed enthusiasm for what the team has accomplished so far and is eager to share it with audiences, adding that they’ll deal with any future decisions as they come.
Man on Fire is streaming on Netflix.
