Netflix’s 4-Part R-Rated Series With 93% On Rotten Tomatoes Has One Of Its Best Casts Ever

Netflix is known for some excellent shows, and one in particular launched the careers of many now-famous actors – proving they were perfectly cast. It’s common for streaming services to invest in big-name casts, but sometimes even a stellar lineup doesn’t guarantee success. For example, Prime Video’s 2026 series Scarpetta, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis, Nicole Kidman, Bobby Cannavale, Simon Baker, and Ariana DeBose, struggled to live up to its impressive cast.

I remember when Netflix released Zero Day, and honestly, the cast was incredible – Robert De Niro, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, Matthew Modine… the list went on! It was a political thriller, and everyone was expecting big things. But it totally flopped, which was a huge surprise. A lot of critics actually said having such a star-studded cast hurt the show, because it created expectations the series just couldn’t meet. It was a real shame, because on paper, it should have been a hit.

Shows like the early seasons of Netflix’s Sex Education cleverly built their success by casting mostly unknown actors. While the show featured a remarkably talented group, very few of its stars – including Emma Mackey, Hannah Waddingham, Connor Swindells, Simone Ashley, Aimee Lou Wood, and Ncuti Gatwa – were well-known when the series began in 2019. The cast also included rising stars like Asa Butterfield and veteran actress Gillian Anderson, and the show did a fantastic job of showcasing everyone’s abilities.

Sex Education’s Cast Elevated The Netflix Teen Dramedy

While Otis Butterfield initially seemed like the central figure in Sex Education, the show quickly expanded its focus after introducing the complex character of Maeve Wiley. The comedy began with a charming idea: Otis, whose mother is a frank and open sex therapist, was persuaded by Maeve to start a makeshift sex advice clinic in the school’s abandoned bathrooms. Maeve hoped to earn money for her future, and Otis was eager to gain popularity by giving advice.

It doesn’t take long to realize Otis, still inexperienced himself, isn’t the best person to be giving sex advice, and he might be helping others as a way to get closer to Maeve. But by the time this becomes obvious, we’ve already met the rest of the show’s characters, and it’s clear they’re the heart of Sex Education. Actors like Mimi Keene as Ruby and Ncuti Gatwa as Eric really make the series shine.

With a surprising amount of heart alongside its edgy, adult humor, the first season of Sex Education carefully explores the complexities of teenage sexuality, gender identity, and relationships. The show takes its time building connections with characters like Eric, Adam – a conflicted bully – and Aimee, a wonderfully charming popular student, making viewers genuinely care about their journeys. While introducing memorable side characters like the alien erotica enthusiast Lily and Otis’s alternative love interest Ola, the series always circles back to its core group, ensuring they remain at the heart of the story.

Sex Education’s Story Only Worked Thanks To Its Sprawling Cast

One of the things that made Sex Education so successful was its cast of mostly unknown actors. This meant viewers quickly became invested in all the different storylines, as each actor had a chance to stand out. The show skillfully explored difficult topics – like Aimee’s experience with sexual harassment – and showed that even characters who seemed silly at first had real depth. It also surprised audiences by giving complex backstories to characters initially presented as bullies, like Adam and Ruby, proving they were more than just one-dimensional stereotypes.

Because Sex Education juggled so many storylines – often five or more at once, particularly after its second season – the show needed a strong cast to keep viewers engaged. Characters would sometimes go several episodes without significant development as the focus shifted elsewhere. It’s a credit to the show’s writing that viewers didn’t lose interest despite this.

Sex Education’s Iconic Cast Makes A Reunion Harder

Many beloved shows with large casts, like the classic Twin Peaks, have trouble maintaining audience interest as the story goes on and focuses on numerous characters. Viewers can become frustrated waiting for developments in their favorite characters’ storylines. That’s why Sex Education’s skillful way of switching between characters while keeping the plot moving is so impressive. Unfortunately, the very thing that made Sex Education popular – its focus on many different characters – probably means the 2023 finale will be its last for quite a while.

A Sex Education reunion seems unlikely three years after the show concluded. The cast members are all enjoying success in their careers and are currently busy with other projects. Asa Butterfield recently appeared in the Netflix thriller Unchosen, Ncuti Gatwa is now starring as Doctor Who, and Emma Mackey received praise for her role in the third season of The White Lotus. Connor Swindells has also been consistently impressing audiences, with roles in films like 2020’s Emma and 2023’s Barbie.

As a big film fan, I’ve been following what everyone from Sex Education is up to, and it’s looking less and less likely we’ll ever get a reunion. With Emma Mackey now starring in Molly Gordon’s Peaked and Simone Ashley leading The Devil Wears Prada 2, it’s pretty clear everyone’s career has taken off. Honestly, while I’m sad about it, it’s a good problem to have! The show really launched these actors into the spotlight, and I think they – and probably everyone involved – knows a comeback season just isn’t realistic at this point. It’s a bittersweet situation, but I’m excited to see what they all do next.
