The popular action thriller series, Extraction, is planning major expansions in the coming years. In addition to a second film starring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, two spin-off projects are also being developed. One of these spin-offs could potentially be even more expansive and action-filled than the original movies.
The new action movie Extraction: Tygo (also known as TYGO) expands the world of the Extraction films. It stars Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee), a fantastic action star, as a former child soldier seeking revenge. The movie brings back the director and writer from The Roundup, Lee Sang-yong and Cha Woo-jin, and also features Lee Jin-uk (known from Squid Game) and Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink (The White Lotus).
You’re probably already excited for Extraction: Tygo, which follows the main character’s quest for revenge in Korea’s criminal world after a failed operation. But the latest news will likely make you even more eager to see it! Following a new partnership between Asia Media Alliance Group and Nation Pictures to create action films from Indonesia and Southeast Asia for a worldwide audience, filming for Extraction: Tygo has finished. The filmmakers promise it will deliver some truly spectacular and intense action sequences.
Variety reports that filming for Extraction: Tygo has finished in Jakarta after a shoot that involved closing down city streets for elaborate action scenes. It appears the film is aiming to match the intensity of the original Extraction, with Don Lee’s character taking extreme measures to get revenge. The spin-off is promising a lot of action and giving Lee’s mercenary free rein to operate outside the law.
After the success of Extraction (2020) and Extraction 2 (2023) – both popular on Netflix, with the first recently appearing in the top 10 – Netflix is expanding the franchise. In addition to a new film, Extraction: Tygo, they’re developing a spin-off series called Mercenary. Omar Sy, known for his role in Lupin, will star as a mercenary undertaking a risky hostage rescue mission in Libya.
After a longer-than-expected wait, likely due to scheduling conflicts with his Marvel commitments, Chris Hemsworth is gearing up to return as Tyler Rake in Extraction 3. Netflix and AGBO recently confirmed that Hemsworth will reprise the role, and director Sam Hargrave is also back on board. Development on the film is set to begin this summer.
