It’s not surprising that the show began to falter in Season 7. This season marked the first time the long-running fantasy series didn’t have the usual 10 episodes, instead being shortened to seven. Then, two years later, the final season arrived with only six episodes.
Much of the disappointment with the ending of Game of Thrones stemmed from the shortened final seasons. This criticism was valid – the last two seasons felt rushed, trying to recapture the excitement of earlier seasons but instead speeding through important character arcs and major plot points. After the finale aired, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss faced strong reactions from both fans and critics. Many hoped they’d learned from this experience and wouldn’t repeat the same mistakes with their next project, but that hope proved to be misplaced.
3 Body Problem Will Have a Shorter Season 2
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss began a new venture. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t working on the Star Wars films that supposedly caused them to rush the final seasons of Game of Thrones. Instead, they signed a $200 million deal with Netflix to create films and TV shows specifically for the streaming platform, including one project that is…
I was really blown away by Netflix’s 3 Body Problem when it came out in 2020! Honestly, after how Game of Thrones ended, I was skeptical about Benioff and Weiss taking on another big book adaptation. But this show totally exceeded my expectations. The cast had amazing chemistry, and the story kept me hooked from beginning to end. The world they built was just incredible. Even though the first season was only eight episodes, it did a fantastic job of setting up this really complex and fascinating story.
It appears Benioff and Weiss have fallen back into some old, problematic patterns, regardless of whether they or Netflix made the call. The recent announcement of shorter seasons is especially disappointing for fans. While six-episode seasons are becoming more common, they don’t seem fitting for a complex story like 3 Body Problem.
The core of 3 Body Problem revolves around two main stories: a group of friends discovering an impending alien invasion, and the Chinese scientist whose attempt to contact aliens sets the disaster in motion. The series explores complex ideas like the lasting effects of the Cultural Revolution, how hopelessness can affect the future, the dangers of groupthink, and questionable decisions made when facing potential extinction. Throughout the story, the characters struggle to understand the aliens – their motives for coming to Earth – and find a way to save humanity.
3 Body Problem Is Dooming Itself Like Game of Thrones
The science behind the three-body problem can be tough for those without a physics background, so calling 3 Body Problem a complex story is an understatement. However, the show’s eight episodes do a good job of explaining the plot and setting up what might happen next. Benioff and Weiss have previously stated that adapting the entire book trilogy will require…
Considering the first season surprisingly adapted material from the first three novels, a six-episode season actually makes sense, even with the reported $20 million per episode cost. However, a shorter season isn’t necessarily better for viewers. Netflix’s focus on releasing entire seasons at once already puts it at a disadvantage. The service might not want to admit it, but it’s missing a chance for viewers to truly connect with the story. Unlike HBO shows, which build anticipation with weekly episodes, Netflix prioritizes instant gratification, which doesn’t last as long.
The second season of 3 Body Problem, with only six episodes, feels like it will be quickly watched and then forgotten. Rumors suggest Season 3 will be even briefer, with just five episodes—a length that’s unusually short even for limited series. This is disappointing because the story is incredibly relevant to today’s world, offering a unique science fiction take on current issues. A show with this much potential deserves a longer run, but it seems that opportunity has already passed.
It’s not a shock that 3 Body Problem is facing challenges. Even highly-rated shows with Emmy nominations aren’t immune to Netflix’s focus on quick production over long-term storytelling. While 3 Body Problem hasn’t reached the point of no return like Game of Thrones, it’s significantly shorter and is already rushing through crucial plot points. This could lead to the same problems that ultimately damaged Game of Thrones‘ reputation.
You can watch the first season of 3 Body Problem on Netflix, and Netflix has ordered seasons two and three. Game of Thrones is streaming on HBO Max.
