NCIS Franchise Officially Expands With New Series Starring LL Cool J

CBS has approved another show in the popular franchise, and it’s bringing back a fan-favorite actor as one of the leads!

As a big fan of the NCIS franchise, I’m really excited to hear that CBS is adding another show, NCIS: New York, this fall! Even better, LL Cool J is coming back as Sam Hanna – I loved him on NCIS: Los Angeles for all those years, from 2009 to 2023. And it’s great news that Scott Caan, who I remember from Hawaii Five-0 and Ready to Rumble, will be right there with him as a co-star.

The NCIS Franchise Gets Another Spinoff

CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach announced the new spinoff on Wednesday, explaining that LL Cool J is considered part of the CBS family. His guest appearances on NCIS over the past two years have been very popular. The writers saw a good opportunity to bring his character, Sam Hanna – a New Yorker who’s been living in LA for NCIS: LA – back to his hometown, offering a fresh direction for the show.

LL Cool J was a main cast member on NCIS: Los Angeles for its entire 14-season run, from 2009 to 2023. Since then, he’s made appearances on NCIS: Hawai’i and the original NCIS series. He’s also scheduled to appear in two episodes of NCIS this month, on April 21st and 28th. Before NCIS, he played Sam Hanna in an episode of Hawaii Five-0.

Scott Caan Will Co-Star With LL Cool J in NCIS: New York

As a big fan, I always thought it was cool when James Caan showed up on NCIS: Los Angeles a few years back, reprising his role as Danno from Hawaii Five-0 – that crossover was a fun surprise! But I just learned he’s going to be playing someone completely new on NCIS: New York, which is exciting. Of course, a lot of people probably remember him as Scott Lavin from Entourage, but he was also in the more recent Fox show Alert: Missing Person Unit – sadly, that one wrapped up after three seasons.

I’m really excited about the new NCIS: New York! The pilot was written by Scott Gemmill, who did an amazing job running NCIS: Los Angeles for seven seasons. Byron Balasco, who’s worked on shows like Without a Trace and Kingdom, will be the showrunner. We don’t know who else will be in the cast yet, but I’m already hooked!

The original NCIS series is still being made and will be back this fall for its 24th season. Fans can also look forward to the prequel, NCIS: Origins, returning for a third season in the 2026-27 TV season, and the show NCIS: Sydney will be back for its fourth season. Other NCIS shows have finished their runs, including NCIS: Los Angeles (14 seasons), NCIS: New Orleans (7 seasons), NCIS: Hawai’i (3 seasons), and another series that aired for just one season on Paramount+.

NCIS: New York will debut on CBS this fall.
