With the release of the new Mortal Kombat movie just weeks away, Warner Bros. has dropped one final trailer. Along with some familiar scenes, the trailer gave fans their first glimpse of the villain Quan Chi and showed that Ed Boon, the creator of the Mortal Kombat games, will make a brief appearance as a bartender. While fans are excited about these reveals, one key detail seems to have been missed.
The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie featured Lewis Tan as Cole Young, an MMA fighter tasked with saving Earthrealm. However, because Cole wasn’t a character from the original video games, many fans disliked him, feeling he overshadowed the established, beloved characters. The upcoming Mortal Kombat II seems to be correcting this by focusing more on the popular character Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. While Cole will still appear in the sequel, a quick scene in the latest trailer suggests he’s in for a dark and potentially fatal storyline.
Cole Young Will Face a Deadly Opponent in Mortal Kombat II
Cole hasn’t been featured much in the promotional material so far, leading many to believe he won’t survive long into the movie. The newest trailer seems to confirm this, briefly showing him battling Shao Kahn – the main villain from Mortal Kombat II and a powerful emperor – in a dangerous, acid-filled arena called the Dead Pool, which will be familiar to fans of the games.
Cole has very little chance of winning this fight, and it’s not just because Shao is an extremely powerful opponent. Since Cole isn’t the main character of the new film and doesn’t have a personal reason to fight Shao like Kitana does, it wouldn’t make for a very compelling story if he were to defeat the villain.
Given Shao’s ruthlessness and the lethal Dead Pool, Cole doesn’t stand a chance in this fight – a loss would definitely mean his death. Shao will likely kill Cole early in the movie to show how dangerous he is and to set up Johnny as the new main hero. This would be a fitting twist, considering the previous film controversially killed off Johnny simply because the actor didn’t want to return.
Mortal Kombat II Is an Attempted Course Correction For the Series
The 2021 Mortal Kombat movie did reasonably well in theaters, leading to plans for a sequel. However, it received mixed reviews, particularly from fans of the video games. While the rivalry between certain characters was well-received, many felt the movie as a whole didn’t fully capture the spirit of Mortal Kombat.
The movie tells a story and features characters that aren’t found in the games, and surprisingly, it doesn’t even include the fighting tournament the series is known for. It appears to be taking more liberties with the source material and embracing the over-the-top style of the games. Some fans feel that killing off the character Cole would be a good way to make amends for the first film’s departures from established Mortal Kombat lore.
It would be a shame if Cole actor Jordan Cole left the Mortal Kombat franchise. Even though some fans dislike the character, most agree Cole delivered a compelling performance and clearly cares about the source material – a great quality in actors for adaptations. If audiences respond well to recasting in Avengers: Doomsday, perhaps he could return in a future Mortal Kombat project playing a different role.
It’s possible that the trailers for Mortal Kombat II haven’t shown Cole’s full role in the story. The filmmakers might be intentionally keeping that a surprise. Fans won’t have to wait long to find out, though – Mortal Kombat II comes out in theaters on May 8th, and they’ll finally learn what happens with this controversial character.
