Barbaric is coming to Netflix.
I’m a big fan of the Barbaric comic series! It was created by Michael Moreci and Nathan Gooden and first came out way back in 2001. The newest one, Barbaric: The Long Death #1, just came out last December, and I’ve been meaning to pick it up!
According to Tudum, Netflix is developing Barbaric as a medieval fantasy drama. The series is being produced by A+E Studios and will be co-run by Sheldon Turner and Robert Rovner. Here’s a brief description of what the show is about:
This story centers around a tough, uncouth barbarian who’s magically forced to only use his fighting skills for righteous purposes. He teams up with a witty, talking axe and a resourceful young witch as they journey to find themselves and seek retribution.
The series is executive produced by Turner and Jennifer Klein of 100% Productions, Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson from A+E Studios, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, F.J. DeSanto, and Damian Wassel representing Vault Comics, and Sam Claflin, Luke Carroll, and Michael Stevenson of Soft Claw Productions.
The release date and cast of the upcoming show, Barbaric, are still unknown. The project was initially announced in 2024, with John Boyega set to both produce and star. There were also reports that Patrick Stewart would voice a character—an axe—and that Michael Bay was being considered as the director.
So, the news says John Boyega is producing this series, which is awesome, but it’s still up in the air if he’ll actually be in it. And honestly, I haven’t heard a peep about the director or the other actors involved, which is a little strange. You know how things change during production, right? It’s totally possible the whole project has taken a different turn. We’ll probably just have to wait until they’re further along with adapting Barbaric to get the full picture.
I’ve been a huge fan of the Barbaric comic since it came out in 2021, and it’s really gotten the recognition it deserves! Critics love it, and I totally get why. It’s a wild ride – seriously funny, incredibly violent, but it also cleverly plays with everything you think you know about fantasy stories. Honestly, it feels like someone took the humor of Deadpool and threw it into the world of Game of Thrones, and the result is something totally fresh and unique. It’s a blast!
