The latest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is packed with thrilling surprises, and the scene featuring Gambit is particularly noteworthy. It hints at a major role for the character in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actor Channing Tatum has been working for ten years to make a standalone Gambit movie happen.
Just when it seemed like things weren’t working out, Ryan Reynolds brought Channing Tatum on board for Deadpool & Wolverine. It turned out to be a fantastic decision! Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit quickly became a highlight of the R-rated film, contributing to its record-breaking $1.3 billion box office success – the highest gross for any R-rated movie. Because fans loved his performance, Tatum was then confirmed to appear in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie.
Channing Tatum’s comeback as Gambit is a particularly exciting part of the upcoming 2026 film, Avengers: Doomsday. It will reunite him with several actors from the original X-Men movies. Tatum is sure to give another fantastic performance as the Marvel character, and fans have already gotten a glimpse of what to expect.
During CinemaCon 2026, ScreenRant was present when Marvel Studios showed the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. While the trailer hasn’t been released online yet, those in attendance saw a fight between Gambit and Shang-Chi (played by Simu Liu). The footage highlighted a key moment that confirms this new film is truly launching a fresh direction for Channing Tatum’s superhero character.
Channing Tatum’s Gambit Takes A More Serious Turn In Avengers: Doomsday’s Trailer
Channing Tatum’s portrayal of Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine was a hit, especially his funny lines which quickly became popular memes. His unique Cajun accent made him a fan favorite and a stand-out Marvel character. However, Tatum won’t be bringing that same playful energy to Avengers: Doomsday. He told Variety that the directors, the Russo Brothers, want a more serious tone for the film and don’t want him to lean heavily into the accent. Tatum explained that when Gambit is serious, it adds a lot of emotional weight to the character.
The upcoming Avengers movie is aiming for a more dramatic and serious tone, and a recent trailer shown at CinemaCon featured a tense fight between Gambit and Shang-Chi, who was wielding the Ten Rings. This suggests a larger conflict could be brewing – possibly a battle between the Avengers and the X-Men, with the fate of both universes at stake. This would mark a significant and darker direction for Gambit’s character as he enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gambit Not Being Used Only For Jokes Is Avengers: Doomsday’s Best Path
It was always going to be difficult to replicate Gambit’s portrayal in any other film, considering Deadpool & Wolverine is the only R-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, allowing for more creative freedom. Given the high stakes – potentially the destruction of the multiverse – a slightly less pronounced accent for Gambit makes sense, and doesn’t mean he can’t still provide some much-needed humor. We’ve seen this before in other darker Marvel films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Thunderbolts, which still managed to include funny moments.
The upcoming Gambit film will aim for a similar serious tone as the X-Men seen in Avengers: Doomsday, rather than the comedic style of Deadpool. After years of waiting for a Gambit appearance, Marvel wants to ensure the character, Remy LeBeau, feels like a natural fit with the existing team in the 2026 movie. Although this is a significant shift for Gambit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s a crucial change that should add depth to the character in Avengers: Doomsday.
