CinemaCon kicked off with some big news about the release date for Avengers: Doomsday, directly from Marvel Studios. While Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be a massive film in 2026, it faces a tough challenge. It will be released on the same day as Dune: Part Three and, for three weeks, won’t be available on IMAX screens because Dune: Part Three has exclusive access to that premium format.
At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Deadline noticed the official poster for Avengers: Doomsday. Disney is confirming the film’s release date of December 18th with the poster, squashing rumors that the date might change to avoid a conflict with Dune: Part Three.

With both Marvel and Warner Bros. actively promoting their upcoming films, the December movie release calendar has changed. Sony recently moved Jumanji 3 to December 25th, leading many to believe Marvel’s Avengers 5 will now come out a week earlier. This would allow it to avoid direct competition with Dune 3 and have a period of exclusive access to IMAX theaters.
Although many expected Marvel to announce a release date change for Avengers: Doomsday at CinemaCon, Variety reported—and Disney confirmed during its recent shareholder meeting—that the film will stick to its original release schedule.
I’m heading to CinemaCon next week – it’s the big annual convention where all the major players in the movie business get together, running from April 13th to the 16th. Everyone’s buzzing about Disney’s presentation, and honestly, I’m expecting Marvel to really wow the crowd with a first look at their new Avengers: Doomsday film. It feels like they’re planning something big!
Although a new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday likely won’t be shown at CinemaCon, fans can still anticipate some news, particularly during Disney’s presentation on Thursday, April 16th, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
Should Avengers: Doomsday Be Worried About Dune: Part Three?
The success of Barbie and Oppenheimer releasing on the same day doesn’t necessarily mean any two big movies can do the same. Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three are different – both are action films geared towards male audiences, meaning they’ll likely compete for the same viewers. This could result in one film performing poorly, or more realistically, both films earning less than they would have if released separately.
If Marvel isn’t willing to change the release date of Doomsday, even by a little, they seem unconcerned about the limited number of IMAX theaters showing it, believing regular and other premium formats will still lead to a successful film. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced some challenges lately, Avengers 5 is still likely to be the highest-grossing movie of 2026.
The Avengers movies have consistently been huge successes – even their lowest-performing film, Age of Ultron, made nearly $1.4 billion, and Endgame earned almost $2.8 billion. While Dune 3 is expected to do very well, likely exceeding the $714.8 million earned by the previous film, the Dune franchise hasn’t yet demonstrated the same consistent blockbuster performance as the Avengers. This might be why Disney doesn’t seem concerned about competition from Doomsday.
However, in today’s unpredictable Hollywood, anything is possible, particularly if initial reactions to Doomsday aren’t strong. The next eight months are vital for Marvel Studios to re-engage fans who have stopped following the MCU and convince them that Avengers 5 is a must-see – a process that started with the four teaser trailers released in December and January.
The marketing campaign for the upcoming film Doomsday continues at CinemaCon, specifically during Disney’s presentation on Thursday night. It’s likely we’ll see Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige take the stage, possibly with directors the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr., to share new footage from Avengers 5. This could include a first, full look at the character Doctor Doom, though it’s uncertain if that footage will be released online afterwards.
