Marvel Confirms The Most Unthinkable Trauma For Wolverine

Okay, so Wolverine’s seen some crazy stuff, right? But this… this is different. As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always loved Logan – he’s a core X-Men member and just… raw. He’s a total savage, but you see glimpses of a real person underneath, especially when he’s with someone he cares about, like Jean Grey or Mariko. It really adds depth to the character.

Wolverine is famous for being incredibly difficult to defeat. His ability to heal quickly, combined with his Adamantium skeleton, claws, and fearless attitude, make him one of the most powerful fighters in the universe. Simply put, he’s the ultimate tough character and never avoids a fight.

But what would happen if his unbreakable Adamantium … broke?

X-Men’s Wolverine Suffers Shattered Claws in Latest Marvel Comic

In the 2026 comic Wolverine #19, Logan experienced a shocking moment when his normally unbreakable claws shattered before him. This event, written by Marvel’s Saladin Ahmed, caused Wolverine to deeply question his identity and purpose.

Ahmed recently addressed his and Marvel’s decision to break the unbreakable in Wolverine #19.

The changes definitely impact the story’s action, but more importantly, they explore Logan’s emotional state. Losing his claws isn’t just a physical setback; it forces him to confront his identity and what it means to have adamantium bonded to him – a process that was incredibly traumatic. I really enjoy getting to explore these internal struggles through exciting Marvel storylines, and that’s what makes this job so rewarding,” Ahmed explained.

This is a daring move, and its impact will unfold in future issues. Marvel has taken similar risks before, like with the ‘Logan’ story in 2017, particularly when it comes to Wolverine’s Adamantium.

X-Men ’97 Adapted Wolverine’s Other Unthinkable Trauma

Perhaps the most famous example recently appeared in the Disney+ series X-Men ’97, brought to life directly from the comics—literally breaking through his skin.

Although Wolverine seems to have his powers back in Season 2 of X-Men ’97 (premiering July 1st), regaining them in the Marvel comics was a much more difficult journey. He had to accept that his claws – which are actually bone – wouldn’t automatically be invincible anymore.

This storyline introduced the well-known version of Wolverine with bone claws. A key challenge for him was the intense pain whenever a claw broke off, or when he deliberately broke them off and used them against enemies. After the events of Wolverine #19, Logan faces this level of hardship, but he’s become remarkably adept at overcoming trauma, wouldn’t you say?

Season 2 of X-Men ’97 will debut on Disney+ on July 1, 2026.
